I pumped my arms por my side as I ran through the bush, kicking up dust behind me and scaring the wits out of the birds nested nearby.
I paid them no mind as I struggled to keep up with a white hedgehog with gleaming red eyes and a black cape; Crescent.
He was a great friend, self-appointed "Healer" of our group, due not only to his medical expertise, but also his sobrenatural abilitiy to heal physical wounds.
It was about 1:30 am, and the people of Australia slept, the locals unaware of two Mobians sweeping through the arbusto, bush at near supersonic speeds.
Crescent led the way, as I was unsure of what to do. This was my first hunt since my Vampiric friend had accidentally bitten me.
The black-robed hedgehog skidded to a halt in a clearing, nearby a shallow waterhole.
I dug my heels into the ground, trying to slow my forwards momentum without crashing into anything. Barely missing a rather sturdy-looking gum tree, I just managed to stop, however clumsily.
Crescent turned to look at me, his eyes as crimson as the blood he drained creatures of.
"Mephiles. I need you to concentrate. You need to learn vampire nature from the beggining." He said, his voice huskey.
I nodded, knowing what he meant. I closed my eyes and focused in on the sounds and smells surrounding me.
After a few seconds, my eyes snapped open and I pointed. "There's something over there."
Crescent smiled, a rare gesture for him. "Very good, Mephiles." As sudden as it came, the smile left his muzzle, hiding his inner emotions once more. "You have to be quiet as you approach."
"Sure thing." I said, running forwards once again, approaching the sound of my soon-to-be prey.
The role of the Hunter was familiar to me, in a way. I had hunted before, many times. But never had I guessed then that I would ever be doing this.
Breathing evenly, I jumped over a fallen tree, and hurdled a small stream. I had to say, moving at these speeds was amazing to the senses, highly enjoyable, yet also kind of scarey. If you ran into a tree... it would hurt. A lot.
I halted as I heard a soft snort, one that I would never have dreamed of hearing before my transformation.
I focused in on the fonte of the noise; an aged Kangaroo, presumably male, due to it's lack of a pouch.
I also noticed, with some pride, that I had been conmpleatly silent approaching the creature; it had no idea that it's life was about to end.
I stared out at it, deciding on what my first mover should be; Attack? That was my first guess.
Making no mais noise than a shadow, I moved towards the 'Roo. When I was about 15 metres away, I leapt forwards, crystalline claws held at the ready.
It was easy enough to get it; The creature had no idea anything was around it, and my attack had been smooth and fast.
I tackled it to the ground, slashing through it's pele, peles with ease, breaking it's neck in a second.
The Kangaroo's furious fight for life stopped as it's energy was drained from it.
I smiled as I looked at my first kill; I was proud of myself for this.
"Nice." Said a dark voice from nearby. Crescent. "You know what to do?"
"Yeah." I said with a nod. "I should be right. You go get yourself something."
I heard his soft footsteps as he left for his own meal, preparing himself for his hunt.
Looking back to the once-struggling 'Roo, I smiled once mais as I lowered my mouth to it's neck, biting into it with ease, and draining it of it's blood.
Once satisfied with this, I got off of the ground, and looked down at myself.
Oh god! There was blood all down my front, dying my once white chest pele, peles a disturbing shade of crimson. I sighed. That was going to take forever to get out.
"Crescent?" I said at normal volume, knowing he would be able to hear me.
In a second, he was back to me, wiping blood from his muzzle. "Finished?"
"Yeah." I said. "I'll head back início now."
"Sure." He replied. "I might be awile, though. I haven't hunted in quite a long time."
"See ya then, I guess." I smirked as I spoke, then telported home.
--
I smiled as I took in the inside of my "home". It was a spacious place, but also very cozy; a Stronghold against the coldness outside.
I warmed the palms of my hands against the fireplace, leaning over the hearth to press my numb claws against the heat.
I smiled once mais as I thought about what I had just accomplished; I had successfully passed my first hunt.
If I was going to be a Vampire, I might as well be good at it.
