hmm, it depends ... Snape lost Lily due to his pride, however Lily lost Snape because he caused her too much pain, i think, with calling her names, and then apologising and him being friends with the bad people while she dissaproved... so it depends on the person, i don't know which one to pick.

Snape suffered pain because he'd lost Lily's friendship to the Griffindor gang and because she didn't approve of his interest in the Dark Arts.I think 'Mudblood' came out of his mouth before he realised what he'd said. That finished him off in Lily's eyes and pushed her closer to James Potter.

i think all of them played a part in the separation of snape and lily's friendship. But i feel that snape's pride got in the way alot, he didnt like to be called coward when he defiantly wasnt, but he let the dark arts get the better of him and the cost of that: lily's friendship which Snape valued more than anything.

he didnt want to be humiliated, niether would i.
and i think that when he called her a mudblood he wasnt meaning to,
and it hurt her feelings.
also i dont think it would have worked out between them anyway cause she didnt like him doing the dark arts and such, so ya.
any way or the other i still HATE THAT STUPID MUDBLOOD AND ALWAYS WILL

I think it a combo of Pride and Pain. 'Cause he has to do all that Mudblood/Pureblood stuff to get himself noticed, but that caused him pain. Its in his family line, which shows pride. :( Now, I am torn :((

I think it's both pride and pain. Severus is a rather headstrong man. But what I think, is he called Lily a Mudblood out of distress. Hell, I tend to say the most sickening remarks when I'm distraught, too, so I would know how that feels. A person completely upset will do/say things they would never do/say when they're NOT upset. And Severus called Lily a Mudblood while being ridiculed by James, out of anger and pain.

So I feel more toward the "pain" option.

Jealousy and pride. Pain is a result not a cause, so I won't count it. Basically, Snape was jealous and made a mistake, then Lily was too proud to forgive him.

Pride that led to pain, and then jealousy that lead to even more pain. Actually, I'd say "A stupid misstake" would be the perfect answer for this, but that's just me...

sapiencia picked jealousy:
I think that it was mostly jealousy. He knew Potter loved her, and she was getting far too close to him for comfort, which resulted in the fight. I think she was stupid not to forgive him, though. No matter who either hung out with, they were still friends, and friends argue sometimes. It was pride on her account. Which lead to everlasting pain stabbing at poor Severus. <3

The word I want has gone right out of my head, but it's along the lines of childishness/immaturity/inexperience...
He was simply too young/hadn't had enough 'life experience' to fix that which he broke. Mix that with pride and jealousy... leaves only pain.

Severus, who never really seemed to "fit in" only wanted to be accepted by others. He was finally accepted by his fellow Slytherins, but that led to tension and fighting with Lily, who couldn't understand him. That tension, mixed with the pain and humiliation of being so publicly embarrassed led to the hurtful words.

The words themselves were caused by a hurt pride, but everything that led up to that point (which, it's entirety it's what made Lily abandon him) was caused by pain.

Ok, they were 15, Severus was just publically violated, humiliated and emasculated yet again by this vicious little prick, only to be defended by a GIRL (ladies, we all know it's true), who's also a "filthy little mudblood". On Lily's side, we don't know what kind of peer pressure she'd been under, and then to be publically called that by someone who was a friend...she may have just had enough. Remember what being 15 was like for you, and HONESTLY put yourself in Lily's place, as a person, and not as "oh she's so lucky Snape loves her she should have given him a break".

There was much more to it than what we saw in Sev's memories.
