Counter parts between animê and mangá characters may look the same, but their personalities are almost always different. With each new region, there are usually only two character counter parts.
Red and Ash: Actually, these two are pretty simular due to Ash and Red being the main protoganists. They both have the urge to never give up, even if it means getting hurt in the progress. Although, Ash started out not knowing anything about pokemon, ending up having Misty teach him alot of stuff, while Red already was intelligent in pokemon once the mangá began. Also, unlike Ash, when Red started his journy at the age of ten, he grew to age to sixteen years old.
Green/Blue and Gary Oak: Okay, ya got me. Green/Blue is not that different from Gary. They both consider their rival as a type of friend, but acts like they are better. BUT Gary insults Ash loudly infront of him while Green/Blue keeps to himself.
Gold and Jimmy: The difference is simple. Gold is a wacko lover boy who gets hearts in his eyes whenever he sees a cute girl ..... or a cute guy that looks like a girl (i just can't get over the Bugsy thing). Jimmy doesn't show effection to girls, even Marina, what so ever, though Vincent thinks different.
Crystal and Marina: Crystal focusses on trainging to be a capture pro while marina simply wants to be a "pokemon idol". Also, Crystal hasn't showed any cold hard evidence to having a crush on anyone and marina often showed affection to Jimmy.
Sapphire and May: BIG difference here. Let's start off with pointing out their different fathers. May is the daughter of Norman of Pettalburge City and Sapphire is the daughter of the ever so famous Prof. Birch. As everybody knows, May focusses on her contests as a coordinator, but Sapphire is the complete oposite as she battles her pokemon. Sapphire is also much mais of a tomboy, but does has courage to tell Ruby her feelings. May doesn't like to talk about her feelings about Ash or Drew.
Ruby and Brendan: Nothing much is known about Brendan in the animê other than that he is probably a trainer. Ruby makes his own clothes and competes in contests.
Pearl and Barry: Pearl is much mais violent then Barry! He gets angered very easily (acording to Diamond) , like Barry, but Barry is slightly calmer. Also, they have different childhood friends. Sure, they are still both friends with the main female character (Platinum and Dawn), but Pearl is friends with Diamond, who is the counter part of Lucas and Barry is childhood friends with Kenny, who doesnt have a counter part.
Diamond and Lucas: There is not much known about Lucas either. All I can really say to differ them is that Diamond really likes to eat.
Platinum and Dawn: Let's start off with this: Dawn has never told a person to call her "Lady" lol. Platinum is from a very rich family, as where much of Dawn's family is unknown, other than knowing that her mother was once topo, início coordinator. Also, Dawn is only a coordinator and Platinum challenges both contests and gym battles.

#5, Magikarp...no big surprise. Even though it evolves into the most awesomest thing ever, nothing is worth raising a Magikarp. The only mover it knows is "Splash", which does absolutely nothing. Somewhere far down the line, it learns "Tackle" and can defend itself. Until then, it's just weak. The player will dump it in a day-care center and come back two years later to collect their prize. And to add insult to time wasting, when you defeat a Magikarp, you get an extremely low amount of experience.
