Tygers_Eye With all due respect, people can think whatever they want about a character. People can watch the exact same scenes as you in a movie and come to a different conclusion. I get the same grief regarding Ariel. Most of the fans don't think she's selfish and uses scenes from the movie to support it. I think she is and can use the exact same scenes to support my point. I agree that Elsa does most of the things she does in the movie to protect Anna and the kingdom. Please don't think I don't. However, I think somewhere, on some level, it was also to protect herself. I think Elsa's afraid to reveal her powers to her people because she's just as afraid of them lynching her as she is of hurting them. Remember the lead troll telling her "Fear will be your greatest enemy" and then shows a lynch mob engulfing her? When her powers are finally revealed, The Duke of Weaseltown publicly crying "Sorcery!" and "Monster!" seemed to confirm her fears. I noticed that while she was afraid of her subjects, she hesitated to actually leave, and only did so when they started reacting in terror toward her. And they only reacted in terror because of the Duke of Weaseltown's fear-mongering. I think it's implied that they might have been able to talk her down, and convince her to stay despite her fears of her powers hurting her people, had they not seemed to confirm her fear that her people would turn on her once her powers were revealed. Anyway, while I don't agree, I can see where people would interpret that she has a selfish streak. She runs away from her problems instead of confronting them. She leaves the kingdom to her HIGHLY INEPT sister so she can embrace her powers. When Anna tells her the kingdom's frozen over, the first thing she says is "I'm such a fool! I can't be free!" She also refuses to go down to the kingdom, take responsibility for her actions, and/or work with them about controlling it. She resists when the men come to take her back, has to be dragged to the kingdom in chains, and then escapes prison when it becomes clear to her and Hans that the only way to stop the winter... is to stop her. This is hard for me to say, but Elsa KNOWS the kingdom is freezing to death, knows that she can't control the winter, and realizes that probably the only way to stop the winter is to stop her heart. Again, she knows it's either the kingdom or her, and she chooses to save her own life. She's rather let the kingdom continue to freeze than do what it takes to stop it. (Except continue to chant "Conceal, don't feel," which, by the time she's dragged to Arendelle, she KNOWS DOESN'T WORK!) Again, [i][b]I[/i][/b] don't hold this against her because I understand the self-defeating cycle of fear, self-preservation instincts; and how many people that criticize Elsa would ACTUALLY be willing to give their lives for the kingdom if THEY were in her shoes? BUT, I can see where people would feel that way. Elsa clearly cares about her sister and her people and most of the film is her doing what she does out of concern for them; but it's also for herself. How forgiving a person feels toward it determines whether they find her selfish.

AudreyFreak Yeah, I agree with Tyger. Doing selfless things doesn't stop anyone from also doing selfish ones (how people, especially here, treat Merida is a great example of that). Elsa is mostly selfless but she does have some selfish moments, mostly unintentionally. And in those polls and the other article, people did explain why they think that.

MadameLee But Elsa didn't freeze her chains until after Hans told her that Anna wasn't back. She freezes (and broke free) because I think she wanted to either 1)escape back to the ice palace or 2)try to find her sister. Most of what she did was for her sister's sake. I mean in real-life King Edward VIII (?) The current Queen's uncle gave up the throne to his inept brother George VI, Queen Elizabeth's dad. Most of Elsa emotions with the snow and stuff is when it has to do with Anna.

AudreyFreak Boy this aged poorly in light of F2. I think she has selfish moments like anyone would. But not as much as certain DPs. I think her actual problem is she totally lacks empathy. She never sees anyone else's pov but her own. I think that is in part of all the focus from the parents she got growing up and spending 0 time with other people, especially ones who weren't obligated to love her like her mom and dad. She doesn't understand or try to understand why Anna (who is certainly no more "inept" than Elsa herself is) is the way she is or that Elsa's choice to lock them both up with little human contact for 3 years played a major part in the aspects of Anna's behavior that frustrate her. She also has a serious issue with accountability. I know that sounds silly when she's always going "Oh, this is all my fault" but that doesn't mean a lot when she never shows repentance or an apology for locking Anna up, freezing the kingdom, almost killing Anna twice, judging Anna when she has no room herself to do so, and especially not her single minded obsession in the sequel that hurts numerous people, including herself. Whether it's because she feels she's entitled to do what she pleases (which seems OOC to me) or simply fails to recognize the part her choices play in many of the troubles the family finds itself in (more likely), it's not really selfishness.
