The writers have given us plenty of opportunities to look back at the show, see the relationships between characters in a different light and maybe have a change in view, but when people make a sudden 180 degree turn, I can't help but feel that you guys are just segundo guessing yourselves. I can't blame you if you are, with all that negativity and the TROLLS in this spot, and this artigo is for you if that's the case.
If, however, you honestly do feel like this is true, you might as well not read, because you'll pretty much disagree with everything I say. Anybody's welcome, but don't try to change my opinion and I'll extend you the same courtesy.

I'm going to start por defining the term 'fan service'. It's when writer/s of a book or TV show pander to the wants of the readers/viewers/fans to increase popularity of a show por catering to its largest fã base. Now, at first glance, anybody can tell you that Delena is the biggest fã base of TVD. Still, that doesn't mean that DE is fã service. We had hints of Delena as early as episode 1x02 and 1x03, WAY before the fã base dividido, dividir could have been determined. Granted, DE was the largest fã base for the books as well, however most viewers of TVD still don't know the books even exist!
Moving on to the point of 'sexiness'. I can't argue Nina, because she's a part of both the canon sides of the triangle. Now, who here agrees that Ian is a sex god? At least for me, he can't NOT be sexy (unless he has that ugly haircut from some point in season 3). Ian and Nina have crazy chemistry, but even that's besides the point. In real life, I don't know about you guys, but I haven't seen a single couple content with just holding hands and smiling sweetly at each other unless they're over 60 years old. That's what best friends and siblings do.
Stefan may act his real age, but Damon doesn't have to. When Stefan and Elena were together, he projected all his problems from his 100+ years onto her. He gave her life experience and maturity way beyond her years, but she was a rather mature young adult before he even met her. She didn't need his worries. They call Damon selfish, but I should remind you that it was Stefan who said "I know the risks, but I have to know her."
Damon, on the other hand, lightened her load. Don't get me wrong, he didn't trivialize life or anything. He just taught her to enjoy her life. In 1x11, Damon and Elena had fun. Stefan and Elena had 'fun' in 4x03 with the motorbike, but I think Stefan was just desperate then. It's not contrived. Think about it. When Elena was human, they never did anything together. He flat out refused to dance with her and something else was always mais important. When he rented out the motorbike, he was jealous of Damon blood-sharing with her. Damon danced with her. I think somebody else said this in a mural post: it's practically tradition now.
In real life, from what I've seen, people in amor can't keep their hands off each other, because their emotions just intensifies the physical attraction between them. A lack of physical contact doesn't necessarily mean 'purer' love. It might actually mean that the couple lacks intimacy and natural compatibility. If Delena was fã service, they'd be humping each other all over the place throughout the show (forgive the crude language). They didn't. You know what really is fã service though? Some weird doppelganger dream kisses that never seemed to be a problem before.
fãs watch shows to see something they love. If you're saying the show took 4 years to build Delena, surely the fãs who came just to see Ian and Nina climb all over each other would have left, no? People stayed for Delena because they trusted that Damon and Elena were yin and yang. Each with their own problems, insecurities, shortcomings. Each willing to change for each other, though they never had to. Each making the other complete.
The best part is that they didn't have to stay silent. Their relationship had a strong foundation in friendship, which meant they felt seguro talking to each other and arguing with each other when they disagreed. Stefan hid Katherine from Elena because she'd never trust him again. I actually screamed at the TV set then, of course she'd never trust him! They were dating, what, three days? What I amor about Delena is honesty throughout their story, no matter how much it hurt. They trust each other. No secrets.
They didn't even have to go behind Stefan's back. I'm going to quote something Damon said once. "It's right, it's just not right now." The writers took the time to make Delena right. If Elena had ditched Stefan for Damon early on, that would have murdered her character. She's loyal, kind, supportive to the point of being self-sacrificing. She was Stefan's humanity at that point and treated him like her responsibility, not like the amor of her life. Elena's choice in season 3 was her trying to stay loyal to Stefan and pulling together the strands of a failing relationship. Elena's choice in season 4 was her realizing that she deserves to be happy and in amor with someone who was everything she needed.
Still think Delena is fã service? Again, I won't try to change your opinion, but I'm going to end this quick. Through all the highs and lows that Delena has had, through all the plot holes and retcons, one thing has stayed constant. When Elena grows as a character, so does Damon. When Damon grows as a character, so does Elena.
Elena grew bold enough to confront Stefan about his urges because of Damon. Damon made an effort to bond with people because of Elena. Say what you will about his 'selfish reasons', but I've watched him repeatedly lay down his life for these people while 'trying to impress Elena'. And left behind in the dust, we have Stefan. In his year-long relationship with Elena, she was understanding, forgiving and everything she could be. Despite all the misfortune in her life, I might add. And Stefan? Where is he now? He's still stuck in his cycle of starvation and ripping and he hasn't made an effort to change.
Look, this season hasn't been exceptional yet. I'd give it time. All I know is that for the first time, I saw Elena laughing with her eyes. I saw Damon smiling at her like she was the best thing he had ever known and she probably was. I saw a beautiful young couple head over heels, fangs into necks in amor with each other.
And that's why I still believe in Delena.
