The rivalry between the 97 WPMS Maserati and the 12 RC Ferrari was going strong por this point. They had exchanged places for the entire race so far, and currently the 12 had the advantage. The two cars were in the straighter section of the track, where the Ferrari was slightly faster. The Maserati had the advantage when the track turned to the turns, possessing a larger rear spoiler and front splitter. The Maserati was mais glued to the track than the Ferrari, which allowed turns at slightly higher speed.
At the entrance to turn 3, the Ferrari made a crucial mistake and slid into a four wheel drift that bled off enough momentum that when he straightened the wheel out, the Maserati was a good car length and a half in the lead and gaining. Corey gritted his teeth and pressed his foot to the floor, pulling through the paddle-shift, sequential manual gearbox.
He'd closed to a half segundo behind the Maserati when they came up to the hairpin turn at the back of the course.
