I actually started crying while drawing this one up. If Phoebus is the villain of this story, then Quasimodo definitely qualifies as the hero. When he was just a baby, his parents abandoned him on the steps of Notre-Dame because he was so ugly. Frollo took pity on the poor child, and raised him as his son (ish) and appointed him bell-ringer so that he didn't have to deal with the real world. Quasimodo is perfectly happy with this... until one day, he wanders outside during the Feast of Fools. He is appointed the Pope of Fools for having the ugliest face, and there he catches a glimpse of Esmeralda. She is literally the most beautiful thing he's ever seen, and the only person other that Frollo that ever showed him any kindness. Esmeralda, however, fears him for his horrendous face and wants to be "just friends." Quasi is okay with this - anything to be with her.But the truth is, Quasimodo is the only character with real beauty in this show - Esmeralda is too naive and air-headed, Phoebus is... well, Phoebus, but Quasimodo is the only one who loves Esmeralda for anything other than her body. I think he's my favorite out of all of them, not counting Gringoire.)
