His fingers held the game piece in hand as he examined the board. The opponent across from him waited patiently for the mover to be made. He examined his thoughtful friend. The dark hair that lay across his forehead and fell into his eyes was unruly and, as always, unkempt. But it had a certain air of style that worked with everything and anything the young man wore. His flashing amethyst eyes were at the moment clouded over with thought and indecision. “You have news for me?”
“Oh yes! I received word from Andlasia. The heir has returned.”
He watched the expressions play on his master's face and in his eyes. His face was washed in surprise and then polite happiness. But his eyes lit with a sincere pleasure only those close to him could ever recognize.
“This pleases you, m'lord?”
“Yes. I have such fond memories...mmmmm I can't wait till we meet again.”
He smiled and played his piece, returning to the game but not fully in it.
“My knight steals your queen. Checkmate.”
