"When I was talking with hide, I said to him, “I don’t want to play with Toshi in the last concert. Let’s play the songs only on the instruments without a vocalist.” I even thought that we could ask the fans to sing. But hide said, “We should play with Toshi, if we play the songs of X.” He said “Yoshiki, you wrote all the songs for Toshi"

Toshi wanted to be a physical education teacher after high school, however, he asked to Yoshiki to move to Tokyo and start a band.

Because of Masaya, Toshi’s relationship with his family was nearly destroyed.

Toshi’s mother had attended the shows held at Tokyo Dome in 2009 but couldn’t speak with her. When his father passed away, he didn’t attend his funeral, something he had highly regretted.

Since then, he has made amends with his family.

Taiji wrote in his book, X no Sei to Shi, Toshi was working as a bartender to help raise money to put into X and had to wear a black wig over his long blonde dyed hair.

He was also in charge of the band’s finances at the time, keeping track of rental fees and other various expenses and calculating them while collecting money from the other members and tracking their savings.

Here is a TV show “ねるとん紅鯨団” on 1994.04.16. Guests of that show were asked to fill a questionnaire about themselves.Yoshiki had been on the show before.Here is a short interview with Toshi when he was on the show. 

Host: Yoshiki san is really mysterious. Because he fill our questionnaire with XXX mostly.

Host: Really? So, if you are childhood friends, then yoshiki san is 28 years old.

Toshi: Yes, we’ve been together since we were in kindergarten.

Host: About your first love, your hair were grabbed[reading the answer in the questionnaire]?

Toshi: About this, though it was in kindergarten, but still, I like that girl very much. I was always bullied by that girl who was really good at grabbing other’s hair. You see, there was a long corridor in the kindergarten. And I was dragged from this end to that end, every morning when I meet her.

Host: Where were you first date take place? In front of the rabbit hut[reading the questionnaire]，still at school ？

Toshi：Ah, at that time， I don’t know dose that count  as a date or not. There was a rabbit hut on the corner of the kindergarten, I think most kindergarten has this. So, I was dragged there by her grabbing my hair.

Host: So, Yoshiki san might have seen Toshi san being dragged to the rabbit hut.

Toshi: About him, we were in the sumire group.

Host: So you are exposing things about sumire group!

And on another occasion(posted by a japanese fan, it might be in an interview of a magazine), Toshi also mentioned his kindergarten first love.

He said: My first love happened when I was in kindergarten. I am just that kind of person who like to be driven. When I am in the kindergarten, I was bullied by that child everyday. Only been bullied by that child, till now,  I am still being bullied.  I feel good being bullied (by that child), and that has nothing to do with my self-esteem.

Each man from his father, to Yoshiki himself and his younger brother, Kouki were involved in entertainment.

Yoshiki’s father also had a huge interest in classical and jazz music like his future son would develop. However his biggest passion was dancing. He was an outstanding tap dancer and went on to study dance and perform in the dance hall as a professional. He even received offers to be in movies but never pursued them once he inherited his family’s kimono shop.

Yoshiki, of course, was a talented young musician in the classical genre until he discovered the band KISS and learned that his best friend Toshi was also an avid fan of them. Along with him, he went on to create one of Japan’s most influential band, X Japan.

Yoshiki’s younger brother, Kouki also studied piano like Yoshiki and attended the same music school, performing in a few shows held there alongside Yoshiki. He went on to be an actor, performing in a couple of roles in dramas as well as worked for Yoshiki as apart of his Extasy Record staff.

There was an erratic behavior of Yoshiki himself. For example, he did not like to eat simple bread which was given at school for lunch. And he brought an electric toaster from home and not only used it himself, but gave it to other students to make toasts in turns. The class teacher was very surprised and forbade the toaster, explaining that some students might use a toaster, while others were not, which was inequality. Yoshiki silently listened to the teacher, and on returning home, he addressed his mother: “The teacher said that not everyone could use a toaster, and it was unfair. Since it is not good, I want to buy another toaster. “

After receiving the money, he immediately bought another toaster. The next day two toasters stood in the class. “Now everyone will be able to make a toast!” - said Yoshiki and applied for a teacher’s permission second time.

Yoshiki had not found friends at school and his interest in studying was completely lost. He often slept or stared absently out the window during lessons. When he grew weary of it, he jumped up abruptly and slamming the door, ran out of class. He often got it from teachers for broken chairs and tables.

While in grade school, like Toshi and the majority of his classmates, developed an interest in baseball and attended training. However, due to his poor health, he never participated in the games. Instead he became referee as a way to enjoy the game without actually playing and participated in games with other schools on Saturdays and Sundays.

As a way to deal with his anger towards his teachers, Yoshiki joined his school’s football team. However during each match he would cause problems. He’d push other players and tap their feet and was even removed from the field a couple times. Yoshiki played well into high school which helped him build strength.

Toshi and Yoshiki are the only two performing on this track.

Toshi provides his vocals for the lyrics while Yoshiki is playing all the instruments as well as his speaking verses.

According to Toshi’s lawyer back in 2009, the 100 million yen (approx. 1,000,000 USD) was referencing to the amount of money owed in taxes and the loans taken out under HIS name by Masaya and his ex-wife, Kaori.

(The actual amount of money they took from Toshi is probably even more than that.)

Toshi’s make-up throughout the indies, Blue Blood and Jealousy Era was inspired by the traditional make up of samurais in Noh theater productions.

His stage image and his way of behaving were influenced mostly by Yoshiki and Hide. 

The lack of correspondence between Toshi’s hard rocker look and the ordinary guy persona within the band was thought to be something exotic and extraordinary by himself and the rest of the members.

When Yoshiki and Toshi started high school, Yoshiki had trouble fitting in due to his constant rebelling against all things authority so he’d cut classes to hang with local bikers while Toshi dedicated his time to baseball, volleyball and other school activities.

Continuing off this post: When Yoshiki’s came to his orchestra rehearsal, his sempai (his name was never mentioned), started to tease him by calling him “cutie” and stroking his bald head. Even going so far as to say he looked like an alien from a Steven Spielberg movie.

Yoshiki told some stories about Hide.

He told about how Hide had been a fat child and though he had lost all of the weight, he was afraid of becoming fat again. While he was with X, whenever he felt that he had overate he would run to the bathroom and start vomiting.

Yoshiki always felt sorry for Hide, being so upset every time that he used to offer to do it with him, “Let me do this with you.”
