I woke up to another beautiful day. I wanted to get out of this house before dad could have a chance to talk to me about my hearing aides. I got ready and headed towards town. I remembered what Granpa had said last night about working and owning the hardware store in town. That's where I could go today. I could go see Grandpa for the dia and get to know him.
"Hey Grandpa," I said as I entered the store.
"Heyt there darling," he said signing, "what are you up to?"
"Nothing at all, so I thought I would come see," I said signing.
"Well, I could use some company and some help," Granpa said smiling.
"Okay," I said, "what first?"
"We don't have anything right now. How did you and your dad's talk go last night," he asked signing.
"Dad thought I was lying to him but he had been lying to me. He thought I was trying to make friends or get attention," I said signing.
"I'm sorry. I know that's not true," he signed.
"It's okay. He'll either forget about them or ignore that I have them," I said signing.
"Oh okay," Grandpa signed with a little laugh, "we both know he is consumed with his work."
"Yeah," I signed.
"Hey Tex, what can I do for you," Granpa said signing.
"Mr. Scott ordered," Tex said signing as Grandpa cut him off.
"I've got it right here," Grandpa said signing.
"Thank you," Tex said signing.
I sat there dumbfounded. Tex knew sign language and not just any sign language; he knew Swachy!. How did he know? He seemed almost fluent in it.
"Talli, are you okay," Granpa asked signing.
"Yeah; how on earth do you know Swachy," I signed cofused.
"My grandparents are Deaf," he signed.
"Oh," I said.
"Anyway, I am about to get off work for the day, I was wondering is you would want to go ride cavalos with me," Tex asked as he signed.
"Do you mind, Grandpa," I asked.
"No, go have some fun," he signed.
"Thanks," I said as I hugged him, "bye grandpa!"
"Don't forget to take you hearing aides out before you get on a horse. You do not want to lose them," grandpa said signing.
"Okay, thank you," I signed smiling.
I followed Tex out to his truck. I really liked his truck. It was a Chevy but that is all I knew about it.
"What have you been up to," Tex asked loudly once he got into his truck.
"Nothing; I have been at Grandpa's store for a little bit," I said, "what about you?"
"Oh cool. I guess you are trying to get to know your Grandpa," he asked, "Not much, just work."
"Yeah. Oh that's fun," I said.
"It's not that bad of a job," he said.
"Cool, so are you going to teach me how to saddle a horse today," I asked laughing a little bit.
"Sure I can," he said happily.
After that we rode in silence. I enjoyed looking out of the truck's window. Everything was getting so green. I bet this is a beautiful place in the summer time. I was excited to live here again. A fresh start, a new friend, and I finally met my mom's parents.
"How come you never told me you know Swachy," I asked as he turned his truck off.
"You never asked,' He signed with a crooked grin on his face.
"Okay," I signed as I rolled my eyes.
"It's true," he signed.
The celeiro that the cavalos were staying in were gorgeous. It's huge. There is stall after stall for horses. Each stall has the horse's name on it. There is polk-a-dot. That one had to belong to a little girl. Another horse's name was Fire.
"Which one is your horse," I asked curiously.
"This one," he said as pointed and smiled.
I looked at the horse's name, his name was Lightening Bolt.
"Is that his name," I asked.
"Yeah," he said as he nodded his head.
"Why did you name him that," I asked, "it's kind of a funny name."
"You'll find out why," Tex said smiling.
I watched as he opened the stall door and walked in.
"I'm not riding him, I hope," I said.
"You what," he asked confused.
I didn't make any sense. When I get nervous, my voice goes all weak and you cannot understand me with my accent.
"Am I riding him," I asked as I signed.
"Yeah, but don't worry," he said as he smiled at me.
Tex's smile was believable. I knew I could trust him. I mean he hasn't told anyone about my hearing problem. So, if I could trust him with that secret then I could trust him and his horse.
I followed Tex and Lightening Bolt to the end of the celeiro where we had came in at. We got to an big empty stall with no door. There was a door on one side of the stall. The rope Tex had led Lightening Bolt with was now hanging and dragging the ground.
"Don't worry, he won't go anywhere," he said signing.
"Is he smart or obedient," I asked, "Or both?"
"Well, he has his days of being smart and obedient but other days, he is neither," he signed as he laughed.
"Ahh, so a rebel horse," I said laughing with him.
"You could say so," Tex said.
I watched as he went into the room and grabbed a blanket, a saddle, and some other things. He grabbed some items that I didn't know what they.
I watched as he saddled Lightening Bolt.
"Are we riding one horse," I asked.
"Yeah, or would you rather have your own," he asked, "I didn't think you had riden a horse before so, I thought you would ride with me for the first time."
"Nope, this is fine," I said signing, "it's probably best I ride with you!"
"Okay," he said smiling.
Tex didn't sign as much as I thought he would. He knows that I know about his Deaf grandparents. I just don't know why he won't sign to me. I understand if we are out in public because it can attention. But when it is just us, I don't get it. Well, maybe his hands are just full and he wanted to finish getting the horse saddled.
"Hey Grandpa," I said as I entered the store.
