Sorry, I was wrong. Devil fruits do NOT come from trees. When a Devil frutas user dies, the essence of the Devil fruit's power travels into the nearest frutas of it's kind and that frutas then becomes a Devil fruit, complete with a swirly pattern and a curly stem.
