topo, início 10 classic action filmes I.

Hello and welcome to the newest artigo in the aleatório Dialectics series! Today we are counting down the best classic action movies! Let it be noted, that right now, we are focusing on films produced in the 90's, but are still enjoyable today, whether it's because of visuals, storyline, cast or acting. So without any further ado, let's jump into the world of action, shall we?

10: True Lies (1994)

Kicking off our list is an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. In this flick, he plays a ruthless anti-terrorist agent who travels around the world fighting crime, but he lives a double life. In the eyes of his wife (played por Jane Fonda), he's nothing mais than an ordinary, boring salesman. Things get interesting when Arnold's character begins to suspect that his wife is having an affair with a used car dealer. So he devises a plan to find out about the truth, but along the way, they both become a target of a terrorist group who plans to detonate a nuclear bomb on American soil. This movie featured numerous memorable scenes, including the limo car chase on an ocean bridge where Fonda is rescued through the sun roof, segundos before the speeding car plummets into the water, or her hot lap dance. That woman was 40 something at the time, but she was still looking quite sexy, thus ensuring the film's place on our list.

9: Con Air (1997)

Another classic worth seeing, mainly because of its incredible cast, including, Nicholas Cage, John Cusack, Steve Buschemi and John Malkovich. According to the story, a newly released convict and ex- soldier (Cage) is on his way início aboard a plane that is filled with the most dangerous criminals of America. But the inmates (lead por Malkovich) take over the plane and hijack it, so Cage is the only option to stop them from reaching Mexico. The storyline is full of action and the no geral, global atuação is pretty good, especially compared to other filmes of the genre. Malkovich (as usual) plays a fantastic, creepy antagonist and if we look passed Cage's immediately recognizable fake Kentucky accent, you have a movie that still holds a lot of entertainment value even after almost 20 years.

8: Starship Troopers (1997)

This sci-fi action movie made it to the 8th place because of it's incredible visuals and dark, gory imagery. In the long future, Earth is under attack por an alien, insectoid race. But the military government that is in power does not tolerate such acts of war and decides to send forces to the aliens' início planet to obliterate them. Oh boy, they underestimated the enemy so very badly! The movie is full of blood, you can literary see the brains splattering over the screen. And what makes it even better, is that CGI was only used at some parts, not all of it. Most of the stuff was accomplished through topo, início notch, classic special effects which makes the bloody scenes even mais realistic, even after 18 years.

7: Demolition Man (1993)

Imagine a future where crime and violence has been utterly eradicated and there's nothing but peace. When one of the most dangerous inmates escape the Cryo-Prison, where the captives are kept hibernated, the world's only hope to stop the mad man por unfreezing the most dangerous, ruthless cop ever. Syslverter Stallone's character stops at nothing to apprehend the criminal and destruction follows as they duel and rampage through the peaceful city. As mentioned before in one of my earlier lists, Wesley Snipes portrays a very good antagonist, a dark contrast to Stallone's character. Despite its ridiculous premise of total world peace without any violence, this movie is definitely worth watching. This flick also gave a boost to Sandra Bullock's career as an actress.

6: Die Hard With A Vengeance (1995)

In the third installment of the franchise (and probably the best), Bruce Willis' iconic hungover cop, John Mclane is targeted por a German terrorist, who's seeking revenge for his brother's death. A Harlem store owner (Samuel L. Jackson) also gets in the middle of their duel as they rampage through New York city to stop the bad guy, played por Jeremy Irons. This movie features a wonderful cast, a clever storyline with several twists, memorable dialogues and puns and also a good handful of explosions, making it worthy of the 7th place on our list.

5: Face/Off (1997)

In this classic Jon Woo flick, a federal agent and a criminal maniac end up swapping their faces through plastic surgery. But the plan backfires and the bad guy gets the upper hand in the duel, which is the primary theme of the movie. The agent wants vengeance for the death of his son while the antagonist seeks to detonate a nuclear device. Like Woo's other movies, the scenes change rapidly, the story line is fast paced and filled with action, only the romantic scenes are slow and cheesy, which is the “trademark” of the director. But overall, it's still a very enjoyable movie with an awesome cast, including John Travolta and Nicholas Cage. And to add a personal note, they are among my favorito actors of all time and Travolta's performance is always credible and great when he plays a bad guy.

4: The Rock (1996)

Unlike now, it appears Nick Cage really knew which roles he should take back in the 90's. He's a part of a magnificent cast, featuring Sir Sean Connery, Ed Harris and David Morse in this movie, where an ex-general of the US military steals a bunch of rockets, filled with a deadly nerve gas and threatens to detonate them over the city of San Fransisco. Since he made his stronghold in the prison complex of Alcatraz, the government seeks help from a former inmate (Connery), the only man who successfully escaped from the “Rock.” Joined por a chemist (Cage) to deactivate the warheads, they secretly infiltrate the prison to take down the terrorists. What makes this movie enjoyable is the cast, the surprisingly deep characters, the great atuação and the action scenes that do not necessarily rely on explosions and CGI animation but special effects instead.

3: Speed (1994)

This movie is an eternal estrela on the sky of action flicks. According to the story, a former cop and bomb expert turns to the dark side and plants a device on a bus, threatening to blow it up if he doesn't get 3 million dollars. What makes the pace literary fast is that if the bus slows down and its speed drops under 50 miles, the bomb will go off. Featuring a spectacular cast of Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock and Dennis Hopper, this movie just gives you the thrill every time you watch it, no matter how many times you did so before. The story is built up really well and so is the tension as the loose bus is speeding through the city. This is one of my favorito filmes of all times and Dennis Hopper is just shining when he plays an antagonist, not to mention the awesome instrumental soundtrack por Mark Mancina. Seriously. Watch it. :D

2: terminator-Exterminador do Futuro II – Judgment dia (1992)

The very best of the terminator-Exterminador do Futuro franchise and one of the best action films ever made, featuring many-many iconic scenes and a fast pace. I don't think I need to introduce Arnold Schwarzenegger's terminator-Exterminador do Futuro to anyone, but just to make sure: he plays a robot from the future, sent back in time to protect the future leader of the human resistance in a war between machines and people. But the artificial intelligence that is controlling these machines also sends back an assassin, the T-1000, to destroy them both. Among many others, the famous “Hasta La Vista, baby” scene will always be remembered por movie fans.

1: The Matrix (1998)

Well, if there is one thing everyone knows about the Matrix is the famous slow motion combat scenes. It is truly iconic and this movie was the first to introduce this visual effect, later followed por countless others. According to the story, in the future, the machines are in control of the planet and they artificially engineer human beings, only to be hooked up to an interactive neuro-simulation, called the Matrix. It's basically a mirage of the world, a prison for your mind. But there's always a resistance, which fights for liberating the people from this illusion. While it is was a milestone for visuals, the movie also conveys a certain message about OUR society and the current state of the world. Just pay attention and you'll hear that message in the dialog between Morpheus and Neo at the beginning of the film. This classic standing estrela earned the 1st place because of its cast, featuring Keanu Reeves, Lawrence Fishbourne and Carrie Anne Moss; it's outstanding and iconic visuals, dark imagery and still actual social criticism.

As always, here are some honorable mentions:

Breakdwon (1997)

In this flick, Kurt Russel is forced to save his wife from a group of ruthless kidnappers and serial killers, after their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and a seemingly friendly truck driver offers them a lift to the nearest gas station. Although the film does not rely on many visual effects, the story and the pace itself is quite bone chilling and manages to keep the tension up throughout the whole length. I can definitely recommend it.

Total Recall (1990)

Another classic Scwarzenegger movie which takes place in the future. Armold's character goes to a virtual vacation on Mars, which triggers a series of suppressed memories that will urge him to pay a visit to the planet for real. But he finds himself in the middle of a ruthless conspiracy and forced to fight for his life in a world where he can't be certain what's real and what's not.

Cliffhanger (1993)

After a deadly accident, an ex-alpinist, played por Sylvester Stallone returns to the Rocky Mountains, only to end up in a fight with a group of criminals who are in procurar for a suit case of cash after a botched mid-air heist.

Mission Impossible (1996)

The first movie of the franchise, where Tom Cruise plays a secret agent of the government who has to unveil a conspiracy without the help of his organization. While technically it's a spy movie, I mentioned it here because of its fast paced storyline and many iconic scenes, for example the one where Cruise infiltrates a seguro from above, trying to avoid the motion, heat and noise sensors on the floor so he hangs in mid-air por a cable.

Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

In my personal opinion, this is the best James Bond movie. Pierce Brosnan has always been my favorito 007 agent and in this film, he must fight against a power hungry media mogul who plans on starting a war that will profit him only.

That concludes our list, I hope you enjoyed it! Did I leave a movie out? Which is your favorito classic action movie from the 90's? Feel free to comment below!
