Once she had the lasagna assembled and in the forno we made our way into the living room, both of us sprawling out on the floor, piles of books all over. We talked and joked as we did our homework, occasionally helping each other when we could. Yet again I hadn't realized how much time had passed until Charlie walked into the house, pausing to smile as he walked past the living room into the kitchen.

"Homework might be a good idea." I said as I wrinkled my nose, wishing that I wasn't behind so we could spend alone time together.

"Yes, we'll have to start being responsible occasionally, or Billy and Charlie aren't going to be so easygoing about this." She said as she waved her hand at the bikes, my face lighting up with joy.

"Homework once a week?" I asked.

"Maybe we better go with twice." She said as she smiled.

My father nodded as he looked at the woods as if he were answering someone. I looked back and a few segundos later Embry walked out of the woods, his clothes wrinkled badly.

"Jake." Embry said as he ran his hand over his short hair. "Can we talk?"

I looked down at my father, to see what his response would be and much to my surprise he nodded and began pushing himself back to the church where people were waiting for him.

"Yeah." I said as I turned back to face him.

I noticed how anxious and nervous he was, his eyes darting back to the woods as if he were waiting for someone or something....
