Hans Christian Andersen probably had mental depression of some kind, because his work kind of mirrors Mervyn Peake's. Both writers crafted stories about people who were suffering from oppression, and whose attempts to surmount that oppression ended with them being either killed or humiliated. Becoming a ghost and living by the whims of a child's good or poor decisions/behavior is pretty much a "humiliation." That's what happened to the original little mermaid. To this day, I don't think the mermaid ever earned her immortal soul. Something tells me that Hans Christian Andersen did not want/nor intend for her to ever attain it.

I definitely think Disney did a nice job in cleaning up the nasty moral found in the original little mermaid text: that pursuing any sort of dream is tantamount to thwarting fate; and fate will eventually crush you/punish you utterly, for defying your place in life.

All I can say is, thanks Disney.

I haven't actually read it but from what I've heard about it I think it sounds interesting. Tragic, though.
