Alcohol-related illness is the second biggest cause of death worldwide, behind tabacco. We tend to get angry at smokers when they get sick and we blame them. We don't blame alcohol consumers, certainly not to the same extent. I think that is just so wrong.
If a smoker gets lung cancer, we say he brought it upon himself.
If an alcoholic gets liver cancer, we say she brought it upon herself, just the same way. Believe me, they get the same crap smokers do. But still, freedom isn't freedom without the freedom to make mistakes.
The prohibition of alcohol leads to two certainties: An increase in organized crime, and little to no decrease in consumption. Bootlegging and moonshine-brewers will continue to sell alcohol untaxed and unregulated to anyone, no matter their age so long as they can pay.
The exact same thing is happening right now with marijuana. Studies show that it is FAR EASIER for a minor to get his hands on marijuana than it is for a minor to get his hands on alcohol. Why? Because of laws and regulations on the distribution of alcohol. Where marijuana is concerned, we have absolutely no means of regulating the drug.
I believe that most things should be legal. Cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana among them. Just because it's much more difficult to regulate if they're not, and prohibiting them will only cause more crime and will not stop anyone from using.
I guess it depends on where you live, because in my country it is far, far easier for minors to get their hands on alcohol than marijuana.
I get what you are saying about prohibition Cinders. I definately understand and agree with that argument. My "Yes" position is more from a philosophical standpoint, rather than a practical one.
So make it illegal to drive drunk. Ow wait... it already is. Perhaps that law should be enforced stricter and the penalty higher.
Right now it is illegal for a minor to drink and though some still do, it is regulated. People who give alcohol to minors are punished. Some bars I go to ban minors who are drinking and the people they got it from (they are quite strict about identification).
When alcohol becomes illegal that you lose all control over alcohol. People who illegaly sell alcohol won't give a damn about minors buying it: they are already doing something illegal so they won't mind selling it to minors.
You also won't have any quality check, to protect people from badly brewed alcohol or alcohol with drugs added.
And you'll loosetaxes. People will not stop drinking alcohol: the prohibition proves that. So you might as well make money from it which can be used for things like education, healthcare, defension etc.
Ow and prehaps a bit cynical and not really an argument pro but more like something I think is true: there are a lot of people in office who enjoy alcohol. I don't think they'll be really eager to ban it.
(It's 02.00 here and I'm having a high fever, so if something is unclear I'm sorry and I'll elaborate when asked.)
That being said I understand that drunk drivers get 1000's killed. Hence why I agree with Sappp; we need to enforce the laws better not make new ones.
I remember learning about prohibition in history class. When the 18th amendment banning alcohol was passed crime rates skyrocketed. People were selling it illegally and killing others over it. And they would drink in secret hence why it the law was repealed. My point is, America tried banning it before and it failed miserably, so bad in fact that they decided to take the law back.
I will make the point that New Zealand has a lot of laws revolving around drinking, and it is great, because it causes a lot of regulation - Even so, we still have quite a few troubles revolving around drinking. It will never truly be something that causes no trouble whatsoever, but we can at least try, anyway.
I will make a quick point, too - If alcohol is legal, then marijuana should, at the very least, be decriminalised - I'd actually rather it wasn't made illegal, because that would be troublesome and allow for capitalism to make money from it... But, if it was decriminalised, at least people wouldn't get in trouble with the law for selling and smoking the stuff.
