'Deadpool' Star Ryan Reynolds Says 'Blade: Trinity' Led To Him Playing Wade Wilson

"Deadpool" star Ryan Reynolds has been in more than a few movies based on comic books. One of them was "Blade: Trinity," which the 39-year-old actor says led him to being cast as Wade Wilson — aka, Deadpool. 

Reynolds told Empire Magazine (via Comic Book Resources) that he was prepping to play a slick talking swordsman and former vampire named Hannibal King when a studio executive handed him a stack of Deadpool comics. The studio exec. told Reynolds that his character Hannibal was essentially the same person as Deadpool and suggested that he try to play Wade Wilson if Deadpool was ever brought to the big screen. 

The Deadpool comics left quite an impression on Reynolds, who first appeared as Wade Wilson in the ill-fated "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" several years later. 

"I pored through the comics and realized that this character occupies a space in the comic book universe that nobody else does," Reynolds told Empire Magazine, before going on to explain the unique storytelling opportunities Deadpool creates. "I still feel that way... There are moments where we really just venture into the heart of darkness and stay there for a few beats, but then it also has this very humorous undertone. We can go places and do things with this that you couldn\'t do with any other superhero property."  

Based on the official "Deadpool" trailer, Reynolds\' words about the darkness and humor are going to be proven true. Fox\'s official synopsis also gives us a good idea of what to expect in the upcoming film:

"Based upon Marvel Comics\' most unconventional anti-hero, \'Deadpool\' tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life. "
