SDCC 2014: first sightings of Comic-Con banners in San Diego – Disney/Marvel’s Big Hero 6 

Thanks to eye-eyed users of Twitter, we now have our first glimpses of the take-over of San Diego by the biggest celebration of popular arts: San Diego Comic-Con, in the shape of this years banners. And the choice of property that’s featured on them is more than meets the eye. (No, it’s not the Transformers!)

The character is the robot Baymax, soon to be seen in the forthcoming Disney Animations feature film,

, scheduled for release this November. While these first banners may feature the cuddly insides, it’s more than likely that alternative banners will show the powerful exterior moulded around him by Baymax’s owner, ‘young robotics prodigy’ Hiro Hamada, as well as the other members of the superhero team featured in the film, known as Wasabi-No-Ginger, Honey Lemon, GoGo Tomago, and Fred.

 is an important film in Disney’s line-up for a number of major reasons; firstly, this film will be the 54th release in the venerated Animated Classics roster, putting it in the same linage as films such as

. Secondly, the film is based on a comic published by Marvel, making this the first direct result of the purchasing of the comics house by Disney, back in 2009. And lastly,

is an massive release for Disney as it is an animated feature, specifically targeting with almost a laser-focus those lucrative cross-continent foreign markets, especially the Asian ones. Haven’t seen demographic boxes being ticked off like that since

Personally, I’m looking forward to it. For a start, the trailer looks like such a friggin’ giggle…

UPDATE: Looks like Big Hero 6 is not the only Marvel property getting the banner treatment around San Diego this July… More banners have been spotted being erected and featuring some very familiar a-holes.
