I’m not going to lie. When I first saw the finale, I was hurt and I was upset. Arthur was dead. How could anything ever be the same again? And while I still do feel pain every time I think about it, I have started to calm down and actually think about it clearly. And I’ve come to realize that it was one of the best episodes of the show.

One of the things I amor about the finale was how there was not one, but two realizations of Merlin having magic. Arthur’s and Gwen’s. And while I do so wish that Arthur and Gwen could have talked about this together, I amor how they were shown and how they were handled por the characters themselves.

Let’s start with Arthur’s. One of the things I amor about this reveal is that it was Merlin who finally decided that it was time for Arthur to know. While Arthur’s dying might have been Merlin’s motivation behind revealing his magic, I can’t help but feel that dying or not, it was the perfect time for Arthur to know. Even if he had lived, I think that if Arthur wasn’t ready to learn that Merlin had magic now, then he never would be. The timing was spot on.
Arthur’s reaction was spot on as well. He was shocked and hurt and I cannot blame him one bit for turning away and trying to get Merlin to leave him. I think his reaction fit perfectly with who he was as a character. I also amor how Merlin doesn’t try and press the issue por making Arthur see all that he’s done for him. He leaves Arthur alone and lets Arthur think things through and ask questions…which is exactly what happens.
In the end, Arthur doesn’t need Merlin to tell him all he has done using magic, Arthur gradually comes to see it for himself. He understands why Merlin kept it a secret and one of the most coração rending moments of the episode was when he told Merlin “Thank you.”

The other revelation is just as great. Of all the characters that have come to discover that Merlin has magic, Gwen is the first and only one to do so all on her own. Everyone else came to realize that Merlin has magic either por seeing him do it and/or him or someone else telling them that Merlin does. So for Gwen to put the pieces together and come to the conclusion that Merlin has magic all on her own is quite an achievement.

Her reaction is also fitting for her character. Unlike Arthur, she doesn’t feel hurt or betrayed. Instead, she tells Gaius “I’m glad.” She knows Merlin. Remember, she and Merlin were friends before he and Arthur were and long before Arthur and Gwen fell in love. She knows Merlin very well. She knows that he would never seek to harm her, Arthur, or Camelot. She trust him and his having magic doesn’t change that. She knows Merlin will do his best to protect Arthur.

I find it surprising that of the two revelations, I’ve heard Arthur’s talked about plenty while no one seems to dwell on Gwen’s. Her revelation is just as important as Arthur’s…and in a way, mais so. Think about it. Arthur is now dead, which means that it will actually be Gwen who will unite the land of Albion and who will bring magic back to Camelot. Her knowing that Merlin has magic is important not just for her relationship with him, but for her to rule and fulfill the destiny that awaits her.

“Oh, no, I couldn’t…” Guinevere protests.
“You can and you will. Come on, it’ll be fun!” Morgana argues.
    “But…”
“No buts. You realize you have to do what I say, don’t you? It’s part of the job.”
“Yes, my lady,” Gwen bows her head, looking at her feet.
“And I want you to come to the masquerade tonight.”
    “Very well.”
“Oh, now, don’t be like that. It will be deliciously...
