“Gaius… are you sure it was them?” Merlin couldn’t believe what he heard. “Maybe you saw someone else? Maybe it was just …” he couldn’t come up with a proper solution because there seemed none.
“I know what I saw Merlin.”
    “And it was Gwen?”
    “Yes”
“But… it is so unlike Gwen to commit such a sinful act. Did you hear them properly, Gaius? You are getting old, you know, and your hearing could have deceived you, besides...”
“Merlin!!” Gaius slapped Merlin’s head from the back and stared furiously at the young boy in front of him. “I know what I heard!”
“Fine!!” Merlin snapped furiously and using his free hand rubbed his head where the slap had ended up. “There is no need to slap. I just can’t believe Gwen would do this”
“Neither can I, Merlin, and that’s why it shocked me.”
    “And Lancelot?”
“Merlin, we know them well, don’t we? Why would they do this unless…”
    “Unless what, Gaius?”
“Unless magic is at play” Gaius suggested. Merlin’s eye widened.
“Magic? You believe they are both enchanted?”
“I’m not sure what to think and it just struck me because Gwen isn’t such a girl. I knew her well and I can’t sit back and accept this like anyone. Since everything that happened after Arthur became king has somehow connected to magic, I was thinking probably this could be one, too. I always think logically, Merlin, but trust me, this one time I really hope magic is the core of this trouble.”
“But… if magic is the cause of this, why Gwen and Lancelot? And why now? What for?”
“That is something for us to find out, Merlin, and we haven’t a moment to lose. Come on!” Gaius grabbed Merlin’s hand and started walking but Merlin remained where he was.
    “Merlin…”
“Gaius, are they still in the hall?”
    “When I left, yes. Why?”
“We need to get to them now. Before Arthur finds them”
“Merlin, as we speak, I think Arthur already knows. Look at them… why do you think Agravaine met all of you down here?”
“To fill Arthur in? He knows, too?” Merlin sounded shocked. Gaius nodded sadly and sighed, placing his hand on Merlin’s shoulder.
“He found out just like I did and is adamant about getting it to Arthur’s ears. I tried to reason with him but he just wouldn’t listen. I’m afraid that with the hold he has on Arthur, the king will buy his words for sure.”
“Then I must get to Arthur. I will speak to him. Arthur will listen to me.” Merlin was about to walk away when Gaius grabbed Merlin’s casaco and held him there.
“Foolish boy! How do you think we can help them if we are both sent packing out from here!!”
    “What are you saying, Gaius?”
“Agravaine has warned us both to stay away from this matter. He doesn’t want us to interfere and will not hesitate to place proper punishment on us if we don’t heed his advice. And if we are to help them, we must at least act like we are doing as we’ve been told.”
“Gaius!! This is madness!! He might be Arthur’s uncle for all I care, but these are our friends and you’re just going to stand back and watch them destroy themselves?”
“This is out of our hands, Merlin!! I want to help, but I can’t if Agravaine finds out and sends us away. We can only help if we stay here and that means we have to accept the way things are at the moment!”
“And even if that means watching Arthur slay Lancelot or burn Gwen at the stake?”
“Merlin, we will never let things get that far. All I am asking of you is to stay away from interfering now. As bad as it sounds, this is one situation you from which you will have to restrain yourself. Like it or not, whatever happens now, Arthur will be responsible for it and you will play no part in this.”
“Do you know what you are asking me to do?”
“I know, Merlin, and I am sorry, but this is the only way we can help them all.” Gaius explained. Merlin clenched his teeth in anger and looked down. Gaius noticed the anger that was boiling in the young man’s blood and knew he had asked a huge task from him. But he hadn’t much choice. Knowing Merlin, he knew the young wizard would be on his heels trying to meddle into the situation and get everyone out of the mess. But his action could worsen the situation and worse yet, he could get them both out of Camelot por sunset. If Agravaine manages to convince Arthur about Gwen and Lancelot’s treason, he could also convince the king about packing off the old goat and the lamb. The situation itself has become messy and if it needs cleaning, Merlin is the one who could do it and he needs to be around to see to that. And for that, they will have to bind their eyes and hands from interfering, no matter how they hate doing it.

“If you ever speak of her this way, Agravaine, uncle or not I’ll have your tongue cut off!!” Arthur lashed out angrily at Agravaine, his fingers pointing towards the lord. Arthur’s face was frighteningly furious, his eyes widening in anger, brows arched, cheeks taut and ears red, flushing with anger. “This is the future queen of Camelot and if I hear your words of insolence ever again, uncle… it will be the last dia of your life. Trust me, Uncle, I may not be my father, but when it comes to passing judgement I am my father’s son. And you wouldn’t want me to prove that to you!” he said, this time his finger poking Agravaine’s chest.
“I understand your anger, Arthur, and believe me, I wished things had been different but unfortunately it wasn’t. I am sure Gwen isn’t the one to be at fault here, Arthur. She might be a victim of situation. It’s that knight, Lancelot! He’s the one causing this trouble. He went to see Gwen and not the other way around. If there is anyone you need to blame, then Lancelot it is.”
“Lancelot has been a loyal servant to Camelot and me; he sacrificed his life for me. I won’t believe he’d cheat with Guinevere!”
“Perhaps sire, you’re blinded por Gwen’s amor and Lancelot’s loyalthy. If you don’t believe me, than why not ask the man you and your father trust with life, Gaius!”
    “Gaius?”
“Yes, he saw them too. Why not ask him?” Agravaine challenged.
    “If he denies it, Uncle…”
“If he does not?” Agravaine inches closer and looks Arthur straight in the eye. Arthur was lost for words. He was angry, practically raging inside, and he didn’t know what to think or say. This isn’t how he planned his dia to be. He had it all sorted out. He was going to get his proposal perfected with Merlin, see out the training with his knights, have a short and brief meeting with his council members and take Gwen out to the woods for some privacy for the rest of the day. Everything has been planned well and what’s left was executing them. And now this! Could it be true? Is Agravaine telling him the truth or is he making it up so that he’ll break up with Guinevere and marry the princess of his choice? But Agravaine did give his blessing to their relationship so why would he do anything like this? If Agravaine had been the sole witness to this treason Arthur would never believe it, but Gaius? Gaius saw them too, and Arthur trusted Gaius with his life. The old physician was mais than a loyal servant to him and his father. He was an advisor, a friend and a father figure to Arthur. He wouldn’t lie, especially to Arthur. If Gaius segundos Agravaine’s information, Arthur would have no choice but to believe it. And it would break his heart.
    “Where is Gaius now?”
Agravaine opened his mouth to utter something but spots Gaius dragging Merlin away from the place behind them. Immediately he calls for him.     “Gaius!”
Gaius closed his eyes and sighed. But he obliges and turned around, his eyes meeting Arthur’s.
“Is it true, Gaius?” Arthur asked, stepping closer.
Gaius looked at Merlin and then back at Arthur. He wished he could lie but could not bring himself to do that to the king. A king he might be, but to Gaius Arthur is still the young boy he loved. And he deserved the truth. “I did see them, sire” he answered shortly. Something pierced Arthur’s coração and he closed his eyes in pain. Merlin watched silently.
“But sire…” Gaius begun but stopped short when Agravaine darted him a piercing look, reminding him of the warning. Gaius resumed his silence and hung his head down. Agravaine smirked. Merlin noticed the smirk.
“Guinevere?” Arthur found himself saying that name aloud, without realising it.
“Sire, I believe this is a very delicate situation and needs to be handled rather… delicately. And I know how hard it must be for you” Agravaine said but Arthur was in a world of his own, not listening to a word Agravaine was saying.
“Guinevere? Why would she do this to me?”
“Sire, I think the girl was merely interested in your position as the king and the privileges you’d offer her when she resumes the throne” Agravaine added.
“Agravaine! I amor her!!” Arthur reaches out, grabs Agravaine’s colarinho, colar and pulls him closer. His breath washing down on Agravaine’s face.
“But does she amor you, sire?”
Arthur releases Agravaine and steps back. His eyes widened in disbelief as the word sinks in. ‘Does she?’ he thought. ‘Has she ever loved me?’ Arthur’s mind was being shredded with all sorts of possibilities. He had always professed his amor for her, be it in public or private but, as far as he’d known Guinevere had never openly shown her amor for him yet alone in words. But she always said he made her happy and she’d wait for him, no matter how long it took for them to be together. Those words were enough for them and they’d been happy with each other. ‘I made her happy, but did she amor me?’ he asked himself again. His rage shook him and he found himself gripping his sword. Behind him Merlin noticed the changes in Arthur and exchanged worried looks with Gaius.
    “Sire? Sire?” Agravaine called.
But Arthur wasn’t listening. His mind was racing back to Guinevere and Lancelot. How could they betray him so? They had his trust as he had their loyalthy, or so he thought. They were both important to him and Arthur regarded Lancelot closest to his heart, his friend and the best of his knights. He opened up his início for him, gave him knighthood and provided him rank among his people. And this is how Lancelot chose to repay him! And Guinevere! What didn’t he do for her? Everything he owned was hers and he’d lay down his own life for her. For god’s sake, he was wiling to relinquish his título just to be with her! And she chose to dishonor his amor por cheating with his own knight! Arthur found it hard to digest the last bit. In fact he was finding it hard to digest anything Agravaine said.
“Arthur?” this time Agravaine shook him por the shoulder. Arthur looked up at his uncle, his eyes red with fury.
    “Where are they?”
    “You wouldn’t want to see…”
“Where… are they, Uncle?” Arthur stressed, his tone deepening into fits of rage.
“I last saw them in the main hall, but…” before Agravaine could continue, Arthur was already skipping up the stairs, taking long strides towards the entrance. He needs to see them himself. He didn’t want to be hasty and to prove Agravaine wrong, he needed to see it himself. Though his coração was aching, deep down he still believed Guinevere wouldn’t betray him. And he hoped he is right.

“Arthur… Arthur!!” Merlin tried to stop Arthur but the king pushed him away and strode past him.
“Merlin, stop!” Gaius grabbed Merlin’s hand and restrained him. Merlin tried to peel Gaius’s hand off him but the old man was adamant in holding onto him. Agravaine stopped por them both.
“Better do what Gaius asks of you, boy, or the seguinte sword will land on your neck, trust me,” he said and left. Merlin still struggled but Gaius’s grip was like an iron, despite being an old man. Both Arthur and Agravaine disappeared inside. Gaius released Merlin.
    “What are you doing, Gaius?”
    “Saving your life.”
“Arthur is going to kill them… we need to do something!”
“Didn’t you hear what Agravaine just said?”
    “I don’t care, Gaius!!”
“I do!! And I am ordering you to stay out of this!”
“I won’t!! Not when my friends are in danger… look, Gaius, Arthur isn’t thinking sensibly at the moment and I’m afraid he might do something to hurt Gwen and Lancelot. I just want to make sure it does not happen. You saw the way he went off didn’t you? Please Gaius!”
“Oh Merlin…” Gaius sighed. Merlin was right. Arthur isn’t in his right mind and wouldn’t hesitate to harm Gwen and Lancelot. And only Merlin can stop him. They need to get inside.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Get the knights while I try to stall Arthur!” Merlin said and sprinted after Arthur and Agravaine.

Lancelot caressed Gwen’s cheek and smiled. Gwen smiled back. She wanted to spend mais time with him but Arthur could probably be on his way back início and they can’t be seen together like this. Her smile faded when her thoughts dwelled on Arthur.
    “Is something wrong Gwen?”
“We need to leave. Arthur might be on his way home.”
    “Let him come.”
“Lancelot! You are not saying that, are you?”
“I think I’d rather deal with him now than to forever lose you. I have lost you once Gwen and will not again.”
“Yes, but I told you I’ll speak with him. We need to be patient until then,” she said and clasped his hand in hers. Lancelot sighed.
“You waited for me all this while did you not, Lancelot? Can’t you wait a little longer?”
“I told you I’ll wait a lifetime for you and I keep por my word.”
“Thank you,” she said, her lips curling into a smile. Lancelot trailed his hand from her cheek down to her neck and stroked it with his thumb. The stroke sent teasing shivers down her spine and she enjoyed it. Lancelot pursed his lips and closed their distance. Her arms found their way around his neck while Lancelot’s other hand circled her tiny waist. He inched forward, eyes still open and a smirk planted on his lips as he covered her lips with his own.

“Arghhhh!!!!!!!!!” Arthur raced into the hall with his sword raised at Lancelot, his face furious and raging with anger. Lancelot and Gwen released one another in shock but Lancelot immediately pulled out his own sword and readied. Arthur ran and struck Lancelot with all his rage, strength and anger. Blow after blow was thrown as both swords clanged and bit one another. Gwen watched in shock but she wasn’t disturbed or sorry for being caught por Arthur. Instead, she stood por in a corner and kept her watch, her face wearing a blank expression. Agravaine crossed his arms and waited por the door, smirking to himself. Everything went on as they had planned. Lancelot and Arthur will fight to their death and if it isn’t now, it will definitely be later. And in case Arthur escapes unscathed, Gwen will break his heart! Surely that will kill Arthur. And as for Gwen, if Arthur refuses to pass judgement on her, Agravaine promised himself he will see to it personally. Smirk turned into smile. ‘I’m sorry nephew, looks like Camelot will not be receiving a new queen soon,’ he thought to himself.
