A Servant of Two Masters- Review

OMG!! What can I say? Lucy Watkins needs to write mais episodes! From the intriguing título to the first trailer we saw last week we knew this was going to be completely amazing, and it was with brilliant atuação from everyone and hilarious comedy!

Things I LOVED:

•Gwen- c’mon, you knew I was gonna say that! I loved how she and Gaius were like the temporary Camelot Detective Agency while Merlin was being all clumsy badass – and the JUGS!! I laughed so much when she knocked Merlin out twice and his face went all dopey! Plus her scene with about-to-have-a-bath Arthur and they were both so flustered and awkward, it was so cute! At first he when he said ‘You’re not Merlin?’ I was like ‘Huh? Am I missing something?’ but then I saw a post on Melisley’s Tumblr (which is awesome por the way, Mels!) and it kinda made sense since it was the Middle Ages etc! And we had Arwen without it being just an Arwen-focused ep, which is how it’s supposed to be.

•Dragoon and the Knights! That scene was so comedic my stomach actually hurt since I was laughing so hard! Merlin’s tryna be all smart to Percy but he’s having none of it and then he uses them as a stepladder onto his horse- payback for last week!

•Morgana/Merlin- Katie’s atuação has really improved in my opinion. Maybe it’s because Morgana’s getting mais screen time to be fleshed out a bit mais but I think she did it really well. The way she creepily leaned into Merlin spoke volumes and I was actually holding my breath, but her best was when she was cooing to the Fomorrah like it’s a damn puppy, not a bloodthirsty murderer!

•Seeing Cook and the kitchens again! Small things make a BIG difference!

•Staircase scene- as predicted, it was short but it was so domestic and Gwen’s sassy ‘You better!’ was just brilliant! And Gwaine’s genuine smile when he came up to see the Once and Futures arguing! On that point- S3!Gwaine was back (he hasn’t really impressed me this series) but I felt he was back on form yesterday and being best buddies with Merls!

•Arthur/Aggie confrontation. Bradders excelled there- his tone was so cold and he radiated so much authority, a true King. You could tell Aggie was scared outta his mind, but I really hope Artie doesn’t truly suspect and condemn Gaius like Uther did in 2x7 because that would totally suck and be OOC, especially after all Gaius has done for them! Plus he’s an OAP!!

•George! He was so funny and I once read a Fanfic exactly like that! Arthur’s face when he said ‘He makes jokes about brass!’ cracked me up!

Things I didn’t like so well:
•Gwen serving Arthur. I liked her getting him his lunch but I would have preferred it to see them sitting together while eating, chatting away instead of her standing over him like Merlin usually does. Thoughts?

•Arthur doubting Percy and Elyan! I mean, they both helped him to reclaim Camelot, have stuck with him for a ano and least ep they were prepared to die for him in battle! But I understand he was just being slightly paranoid as he’s the King now and feels all responsible etc.

•I’m a bit tired of seeing action-magic being limited to throwing you opponent back a bit but still, I quite enjoyed it. Morgana even sounded slightly convincing when she tried to get Dragoon on her side!

Overall, I loved this ep so much and it was all about Merls and Gwencakes. Everyone contributed, the plot was both interesting and it had some of the best comedy scenes ever (I’m sure you agree!). The last scene though- that really intrigued me. Morgs treats Aggie like dirt and yet he still comes to her time after time, and when he found her on the ground he looked distraught, and was actually crying! What’s that about? I hope we get to see mais about his motives soon!

kbrand5333 What did the post say on Melisey's tumblr? I don't "do" tumblr, and therefore have no idea... I totally agree on the magic battles being sort of one-trick-ponies. I found myself thinking, "Is that ALL they can do?" Yeah, Dragoon/Emrys' whirlwind thing was pretty cool, but it's still a variation on a theme. I loved the A/M scene at the end, where M asks A why he just doesn't give George the job. Arthur's answer was AWESOME for many reasons: It was funny. It had an amazing conspiratorial tone. It illustrated A's earlier words to both M and G. Loved it. Perfect scene. Again: Agravaine must die.

Bonne-Bell I don't do tumblr either so I don't know what Melisey said. But what I think that Arthur said that because he was talking to Merlin when he was behind the screen so when he came out he expected to see Merlin but he found Gwen instead. I would have liked it if Gwen and Arthur had been eating together too. But I didn't mind the way it was done because I saw it as more like Gwen doing Merlin a favour than her acting as a servant to Arthur. Also I can't imagine that Arthur would have just let her stand there while he ate so in my mind she had gotten him his lunch, left to attend to her duties then came back to see if he was finished and that's when Merlin came in. That's my head cannon anyway.

Melisey Dreaminghope, Thank you for liking my tumbir.:) I love your review. Gwen was sassy a few times this episode. She was determined to keep her man safe. She even raised her voice when she said; "I don't think you can have a bath today." About my tumbir. It was a discussion with the Merthur fans. They were saying that Arthur expecting to see Merlin was gay. I was saying that of course he expected Merlin. He was there filling up the bathtub and so on.

Bonne-Bell @Melisey, exactly. I don't see how him expecting Merlin to be there when he had just been talking to him can be interpreted as gay, but whatever. Also since servants in this time period did everything for their masters including bathing and dressing them, I'm sure that Merlin has seen Arthur naked and that Gwen has seen Morgana naked. There's nothing gay about it. Also haven't these people ever been to change rooms where men and women walk around stark naked? Do they see that as being gay too? I've got nothing against homosexuality but I hate how our society won't let men show any affection or feelings of comaraderie towards each other without being accussed of being gay. And we wonder why so many men are emotionally stunted and don't have close friends.

EPaws Merthur stupidity was epic this week. Just epic and gratuitously dumb. They were not even logical. Excellent review. As Kim said, what part of personal servant do these people not understand? Oh and clue in, I know you are all desperate but not everything is sexual. Sometimes it is just damn funny.

Bonne-Bell This is why I'm hesitant to join tumblr. I just know that if I was there I would be getting into argument after argument with these people. I just hope that it's because they are young and don't know much about the role of servants in that time period. Because people can't willfully be deluding themselves like this. I mean Merlin and Arthur can't even stand next to each other without them seeing gay subtext. There has been times this season when the show has definetly played up to the slash fans but this just wasn't one of them.

EPaws Thank you, Bonnie. Thank you very much. I tend to get rid of the idiots almost instantly by unfollowing. I have a low tolerance for bullshit. It is my personal space and I have no intentions of ever offending anyone outright to be cruel, but let it be clear. It is my space and about my likes and Merthur isn't one of them. I also don't feel the need to say that I am not ante-gay cause if you knew of any of my fanfiction works that actually got written up all proper like, one of the biggest is about a male pairing whom I adore. So that isn't my issue. Stupidity is and those so unfortunate to disrespect love and friendship in this way.

HumbleQueen Thanks for the great review, DH. Very thorough and you speak for the majority of us on almost everything. When I first saw the lunch scene my reaction was that I liked the way she was standing there and they were chatting away. Liked seeing that side of the relationship. Even though we don't get to hear them having nice little conversations about incidental things and just being themselves, I feel we got just a little peek into that when Merlin came into the room. She was even being a little flirty and blushy with him. Besides, I saw her as being more "wifey" like than a servant, lol. Ooooooo, I am SO curious about what's up with Aggy regarding Morgana. And Yes! I loved Arthur's tone when he had his confrontation with Aggy. It was great to see him fearful before the king. Slowly but surely Arthur is getting there.

Melisey LOL they could make the most random things in to something gay. And I agree with you Bonne-Bell and Stacey. I have nothing against homosexuality. My favorite character on Glee is Kurt. And he is gay. And should be gay. My issue is also turning a friendship in to something it's not. Arthur and Merlin's friendship is epic. And it is bromance at it's best. :) But don't let tumbir scare you, Bonne-Bell. To me it has been a wonderful experience. And the discussions have been respectful for the most part. If it's not, it is easy to ignore.
