It wasn't difficult for Silver to shimmy her way the rest of the way across the beam. Once she reached the other wall, she gripped the beam and lowered herself. For a moment, she hung from the beam por her fingertips before releasing her hold.
Silver landed in a crouch behind a stacked engradado, caixa and froze for a moment. Her coração thudded in her ears, making it difficult to listen for the shouts and alarms she was dreading. The calm murmurs of the gamblers continued.
She crept down the line of crates, careful to keep in the shadows, until the murmurs grew to talk.
"I swear, they never even saw us coming," one of the men said.
"The Ponzi scheme... Oldest trick in the book."
Silver smiled. This mission was easier than she had imagined. She knew good and well what the Ponzi Scheme was. It was an old conn that any good swindler could get away with.
Except these guys, she thought as she took one of the devices Blaze had given her from her pocket and stuck one to the side of the engradado, caixa seguinte to her.
"All those heros, yet not a single one has caught us."
She crept progressivo, para a frente through the stacks of engradado, caixa that bordered the room, planting mais devices as she went.
"Three years... Gotta be a record."
"Those cops depend too much on them. The Masks do the work, and the posers clean up the mess."
Silver tried to imagine the faces of the police officers as they listened in on the insults as the conversation was broadcasted through the devices to the police scanners.
She planted the final bug and glanced through a gap between the crates. She had made her way in a full círculo around the room and was now back to where she had started.
Peering through the gap, she made out the three con-men. They were all bulky, middle-aged men with five o'clock shadows and slicked back hairdos. They had a variation of glittering rings on their fingers and golden chains around their necks. Cigars, undoubtedly Cuban and highly expensive, dangled from their mouth as they studied the cards in their hands. It was almost like a scene from one of those Las Vegas casino movies.
Silver felt a twinge of hatred to these cheating, lying con-men who roubou from the innocent and kept the money for themselves. Thieves. Her anger rose a notch mais as she listened to them bash the police of Gotham. She caught the words "undignified", "naive", and "cowardly".
Remembering her mission, Silver turned to the ladder that would lead her to one of the windows. A fire-escape. Her planned escape.
One of the hulking bodyguards stood in her way.
"You're not supposed to be in here," he said in a deep, guttural voice.
"You mean this isn't the pizzeria? My bad," Silver said, taking a step back. Her back collided with the chest of a segundo bodyguard.
"Where do you think you're going?" he asked.
Silver clenched her fists. "I was just leaving," she said, then launched an elbow back into the guard behind her.
He doubled over, and Silver launched a side kick at his equivalent's rib cage.
She didn't have time to celebrate as her boot made contact, cueing an audible crack and the first guard fell to his knees. The man behind her had recovered quicker than she had anticipated and wrapped his arm around her throat in a choke hold.
Struggling for air, Silver stomped on his foot and flipped the bodyguard over her head. Unintentionally, thought she wouldn't have minded claiming it as part of her plan, the guard fell on the other and they both tumbled to the ground.
"Whoops," she panted, jumping over them. She scurried up the ladder, but was stopped as a hand clamped around her ankle.
Looking down, she saw another guard with his hand around her ankle.
Three men, three bodyguards, she thought to herself with disgust. The conn men stood behind him, looking smug in their too-tight suits.
"Looks like we got a-" one of the conns began, but before he could finish, the blare of sirens and screeching tires filled the air.
"Come out with your hands up!" a very angry voice yelled through a bull-horn from outside the warehouse.
Silver kicked the guard grasping her ankle in the face, forcing him to let go, and climbed up to the window with record speed.
"Sorry I can't stay for the party," she called down right as the doors of the warehouse were kicked in. "SilverWings out!"
The police swarmed in, ordering the bodyguards and the conn-men to put their hands in the air.
Silver stood from her crouch and looked up at the window she had jumped out of. No one tried to follow her as she ran off back to the motorcycle, where she met Blaze with a wide grin.
"Mission accomplished," she reported, accepting the capacete and climbing on the bike behind him.
"Indeed. Mission accomplished," Blaze said, gunning the engine. He road back into to Gotham, his protege asleep behind him.
