Well, I'm from South Africa. My mom is a local woman of a Zulu tribe, and my dad is an American businessman living in South Africa. We all speak AE in our family, and since my dad is an American citizen, I feel half American myself, best of both worlds. I guess that makes me part Saffer part Yankee.

Is it true that "yankee" only refers to people from the northern US? We use it to refer to anyone from anywhere in the US, I never knew there might be a north/south distinction til about a year ago.

If you've ever heard an australian say "seppo", it's a rather mean word for an american, derived from rhyming slang: "yank" --> rhyming slang with "septic tank" (oof) --> shortened to "seppo". Just an FYI if you ever hear "seppo" lol

@ThePrincesTale You can say Yankee, or Yank, to Californian like me anytime. For some other folks, it can be a problem. That goes for the Golden State. Not sure 'bout some other states. Some folks livin' in southern states might get offended, if you call them Yankees, or Yanks, or somethin' like that. But most of the time it goes for anyone from the States. Well, almost anyone.

@memefreak Cool thanks! The General American accent and the Southern American accent is about the only two accents in North America that I can tell apart, so that works lol

I've accidentally mistaked a Canadian for a US-ian too many times... sorry @ my canuck friends

Edit: actually I'm pretty sure I can tell apart a Boston accent too. Can people from the US narrow down other accents to state / region?

From New Zealand, so when I'm talking, I'll say 'bro', 'mate' and 'chur' quite a lot. I also call some of my workmates 'cuz' xD

If ya'll heard how I talked IRL, compared to how I do on here, well, you'd probably all be surprised.

Haha basically Kiwi English has acquired quite a few link and it's one of the Great Australian Pastimes to give them shit for it lol (other pastimes: binge drinking, backstabbing Prime Ministers)

(I think we're a bit jealous that the kiwis have nicer landscapes and an immeasurably better government tbh)

Edit: link has a pretty average kiwi accent.

@ThePrincesTale. Lol, I most certainly do not say it like that. I pronounce it as 'six' xD

I thought it was Aussies that say it as 'sex'... ^0^

I admit, I have had a long habit of binge drinking, though. Lmao. I don't do it so much any more though xD

@Kuro You just think you say it as "six", the rest of us normal humans hear "sex" ;)

In all honestly, it's an exaggeration to say that kiwis say "sex" as "sex" lol, but they do indeed do something wild to that vowel xD Also see: "fish and chips" --> "fush and chups".

Meanwhile Australians do something absolutely whack with the "o" vowel. link nailed it though. Try saying "no" with an aussie accent lol.

@memefreak yeah I've actually been intending to start one of those link trends on fanpop for years lol. Not faces but just voices. Unfortunately gonna be exiling myself from fanpop for a week or so (starting today lol) bc I have shitloads of uni work atm.

@kuro Lolol binge drinking is a staple on both sides of the Tasman

^ Lol, I'll take your word for it. XD

However, I have called them 'fush n chups' on purpose at times, just for a laugh. Oh you can probably just imagine the random shit I'd say for a laugh, anyway. Us Kiwis, I guess. Aussies love us ;D

Hmmm, I did it in my head. I'm not sure if it was supposed to sound like it did, or not xD

But yeah, I guess Aussies binge drink as well. I still haven't visited you guys, yet. Funny to think that I went to Japan before Aussie. Lol. I'll have to go there and binge drink someday. XD

Hahaha I have a very mild aussie accent (city born and bred) so I'll also turn it up for a laugh, in-person and online. Rantycat link already lmao

We do love our trans-tasman cousins you but you'll never hear us admit it :3

I haven't managed to get to NZ yet! It's in my top #5 destinations bc nice nature + LotR pilgrimage to Hobbiton. Over in Europe they were surprised I'd never just popped over to "your neighbour" but I'm like guys, it's still 4 hours on a plane. None of this "just hop in a car and drive half an hour to Belgium" business that they take for granted lol

Lol, true. I guess it is kinda amusing - I have been known to put on an English accent and an Irish accent at times, as well. Actually, they both sound pretty terrible, but yeah, I do me. XD

Oh, yep, I can see that. I might have to leave you some more Kiwi-sounding props next time then. Haha. Tis' only fair, after all.

Yeah, well, we're just across from each other, I guess - gotta unite against the rest of the World. Oceania, baby! xD

Yeah, well, you should do it when you get a chance to. I'll do the same, probably. And yeah, I want to go to Europe, as well. Peoples certainly underestimate just how good it would be to just be able to drive across a border... meanwhile, NZ and Aus be like...
