EDIT: Now that I actually have a decent fountain pen and plenty of ink, I've learned that they are, in fact, superior to ball point pens in every way.
Unless you're trying to write in a low pressure environment, so unless you're a pilot, fountain pens are better.
Black-coloured ballpoint, or else a nice fountain pen when I can, because quill points are gorgeous. Also have different-coloured pens allocated to specific things in my notes, because COLOUR-CODING <3
I always handwrite and despise having to type (mostly because I'm a shit typer and currently bashing this out with my index fingers, but also for more valid reasons)... why does seemingly everyone now type up everything? Lectures at uni are just a sea of laptops (mostly Macs because one half of my degree is law and they're all rich bastards living off their parents' money, lol). This is even in biology lectures... people, if you think you can learn a science subject by typing only, you have another thing coming for you. Science notes need the graphic freedom that pen and paper give you- to write in margins, draw diagrams, do equations, superimpose lines, etc.
Personally one of the reasons I prefer handwriting because it seems more intimate than typing, involving feeling the pen and paper, moving the writing implement, directing precise motor movement by thought. Typing involves merely pressing the right key, and movement is exactly the same whatever the letter. On a less sentimental note, studies suggest that because of the very different cognitive processes required for these two activities, different brain regions are activated and handwriting ultimately leads to better understanding and memory.
Since I've gotten myself into a mini-rant anyway, I'll add that whenever someone complains that exams should be typed, I have a very real desire to clobber them over the head.
