The uncle of Duchess of Cambridge, Gary Goldsmith, has been charged with assaulting his wife after they got into an argument early yesterday morning.

The 52-year-old was charged with the offence after the alleged beating near his home in Wimpole Street, London, at around 1.20am on Friday.

The couple had recently returned from a night out at a private members’ club when Julie-Ann Goldsmith, 47, was found injured their home.

Goldsmith had punched her in the eye with his left fist and left his wife unconscious after she struck her head on the pavement, according to The Sun.

Mrs Goldsmith was taken to hospital by ambulance where she was treated for her injuries. She has since been discharged.

It was also reported that the couple had begun arguing after Mrs Goldsmith confronted her husband about his alleged cocaine use.

Daniel Shepherd, a taxi driver, told the Sun: ‘He was screaming and swearing at her and she slapped him round the face and his glasses fell off. It kicked off as they tried to unlock door.’

‘He then turned and hit her in the face with a left hook. She fell and cracked her head on the pavement.’

Describing his pride at seeing Kate marry The Duke of Cambridge, he said: ‘She is this confident, clever, caring girl who has taken her responsibilities in marriage and job incredible seriously.

‘I think everyone thinks she’s sincere, in love and doing her job to the best of her ability.’

Goldsmith was brought up with his sister in Southall, west London. Their mother worked in a shop and also did accounts, while their father was a painter and decorator.

Last night a Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: ‘Gary Goldsmith was charged on Friday, 13 October with assault by beating.

‘This relates to an incident on Friday, 13 October. He has been bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 31 October.’

The 47-year-old was allegedly seen walking two Chihuahuas in Regent’s Park yesterday, but did not ‘want to talk about what happened’.
