Toads are ordinary, non-magical creatures popular among Muggles as well as witches and wizards. Although they do not have magical abilities they are useful to perform spells on or test potions on. The toad has been by far the least popular choice of pet, having gone out of style years ago. You would bring a toad to Hogwarts as you are cautious, and want something practical to test your magic abilities on — humanely, of course.

Owls are birds of prey. Normally, they are nocturnal and generally keep to themselves, but in the wizarding world they serve many needed functions and have many sorts of personalities. You chose to bring an owl because you are practical and will be able to use your pet to communicate with those outside of Hogwarts.

A cat is a domesticated creature who is used in both the wizarding and Muggle worlds as a pet. By brining a cat, you’ll not only have a constant companion, but also someone to keep the mice at bay.

Rats are small mammals of the order Rodentia, distinguishable from mice by their larger size. Rats are typically regarded as vermin or pests, although they can be domesticated and kept as pets. Like the toad, they provide a good subject for testing harmless potions and spells on.

A Pygmy Puff is a miniature Puffskein, bred in the back of Fred and George Weasley’s shop Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. They are sold there as one of the known products in the WonderWitch range. Pygmy Puffs resemble little fluffy balls that roll around, squeak, and come in various shades of pink and purple. A pygmy puff could provide a fun study break, and you would love cuddling up with it by the common room fire.

You don’t seem responsible enough to take care of a pet at Hogwarts. You would likely neglect it because you are too busy playing Quiddict or studying. That’s okay though, plenty of kids don’t bring pets to school.
