What about Belle's son?

Why do Rhett said that he's a legal carer of a little boy in New Orleans? And what about the moment when Wade asked him about "the other sons"?

Do you think that this boy is Belle Watling's son [whom Belle mentions to Melanie]? And Rhett's son as well?

There is an explanation in "Rhett Butler's People". As to Rhett being the legal carer to Belle's son its true, but he isn't his father.

Do you know what the assumption was based on? I never could find anything in GWTW that gave mais than a hint. Isn't it funny how different authors explain this child away?

I have always thought the boy belonged to Belle Watlin, but not necessarily Rhett's child. But, the information given in the book (as scanty as it is) would lead one to think the child perhaps did belong to Rhett. I smile and wonder sometimes if Margaret Mitchell wanted us to guess. In the sequel I wrote (The Winds of Tara), I did make the child Rhett's and named him "Luke". Best possible guess in my opinion, and I was tickled to see that someone else wondered about this too.
