Adele released “Hello” on Friday, the first track off her forthcoming return album
and a song that the singer herself called a “massive breakthrough” in the creative process.
“My writing had been pretty slow up to that point,” Adele told SiriusXM host Jenny Eliscu during an interview set to air Friday on The Spectrum channel.
According to Adele, she was initially a little uneasy about the song’s opening line (“Hello, it’s me”), but was ultimately won over by the verse. “I knew it was going to be the first thing I was going to come back with,” she said.
“It happened quickly when I was writing it, so I felt that was a good sign,” Adele said of “Hello.” “But also it’s incredibly conversational. I didn’t want to come back with some spectacular point. I didn’t have any points to prove.”
arrives on Nov. 20, Adele admitted that there’s “some darkness” on the album. “Just because I like to be dramatic. I’m a bit of a drama queen,” she said. “There’s nothing that’s more poignant in my life than there is in anyone else’s life. It’s just that I write about it, so it kind of lasts forever.”
Adele had previously called the album a “make-up record,” and said ultimately
“This record is all about how I feel as opposed how someone else has made me feel,” she said. “That’s why it’s a make-up record because I’m dealing with myself for the first time in my life.”
