At least one Twin Peaks mystery was solved today with the announcement that Showtime’s forthcoming revival of David Lynch’s surrealist drama will premiere in “early 2017.” Early 2017 replaces the previous announced release date of “hopefully sometime between now and the moment the planet is swallowed by a dazzling supernova.” Showtime president David Nevins announced the appropriately mysterious date at the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour, where he told reporters Lynch and the crew are roughly halfway done with production.

Nevins’ most optimistic plan was to launch the show this summer, but he said Lynch’s current production pace makes a 2016 release nearly impossible. But Nevins promised Twin Peaks will be well worth the wait, as he watched around 25 “stupendous” minutes of the footage Lynch has already shot. The other silver lining is a potentially longer series than the nine episodes originally announced, though the episode count has yet to be finalized. As previously reported, the series will take place in the present day, a full 25 years after the original events that creeped the hell out of everyone. Kyle MacLachlan and Miguel Ferrer are reprising their roles, while Laura Dern joined the cast in a top-secret role yet to be announced. But Dern’s role should leak any minute now. It’s not like Lynch is particular about these things.
