Haha, I've never really known for sure, but I think it has something to do with them being book worms. Because both Rory and Jess read so much literature and are really smart, they somehow got the name literati.

I had wondered that to for awhile . But if you look up literati it says "persons of scholarly or literary attainments; intellectuals." Which I think definetly fits the two of them. Plus combining there names doesn't turn out so well, so I can see why they Literati came to be.
