A lot of people, including non-comic fans, think that Christopher Nolan's batman films are well-made, high-class films. In fact, several versions of Batman, including the 60's show and 90's films, are treated as if they're inferior and not worth taking seriously.
However, I, whatsupbugs, am one of Batman's mais obsessive and geeky fãs and I'd like to propose a theory. It's a crazy theory, but I still believe in it. My theory is that the 1991 comedy film, Alyas batman en Robin, is better than Christopher Nolan's highly-acclaimed trilogy.
You're probably already confused and you might think this is a joke. However, I genuinely believe that the Nolan trilogy would of been better if it had been mais like Alyas batman en Robin.
Most of you probably know the three Nolan films: batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. However, you're probably wondering what Alyas batman en Robin is. Alyas batman en Robin is a 1991 film, that was made in the Philippines. It's mais of a comedy and a parody, than an official action film.
Alyas batman en Robin stars comedian Joey de Leon as the older brother of Kevin (played por de Leon's real-life son, Kempee). The duo decide to start dressing up as batman and Robin, because one of Kevin's classmates, named Jocson, has started committing crimes, while dressed as the Joker. Jocson works with his uncle, who dresses like the pinguim and a mysterious woman, who calls herself Catwoman. batman and Robin attempt to stop the villains, but batman is distracted por his romantic attraction to Angelique Legarda, a reporter.
Alyas batman en Robin has several música numbers, that are parodies of popular songs. Also, various superheroes have cameos at the end. As you might expect, the film is campy, silly, over-the-top and very random.
You might think I'm crazy, for liking the outlandish Filipino batman film mais than the big-budget, professionally-made Nolan films. However, before you send me off to Arkham Asylum, allow me a chance to explain myself. Nolan's batman films do have some good elements, like great casting, a few good emotional scenes and action-packed chases and fights.
However, Nolan's films are missing some important elements, that batman films should have. Nolan's films seem too obsessed, with trying to be serious, dignified films, than actually being enjoyable and entertaining films. Alyas batman en Robin makes me smile and the film is blossoming with such a goofy and fun-loving feeling. Nolan's films are overly-serious, dark and realistic. A lot of batman fãs claim The Dark Knight is the best batman film ever made. However, Alyas batman en Robin puts me in a much better, happier and sillier mood, than The Dark Knight.
In the Nolan films, batman is so dark, that he even dresses in black. He mopes around, acts intimidating and generally doesn't seem like a happy person. In Alyas batman en Robin, batman experiences a brotherly-bond with Robin, experiences romance-related happiness with Ms. Legarda and even learns to find some good in his former enemies. The Filipino batman actually smiles and enjoys life. He's a delight to watch, unlike the overly-serious batman of the Nolan trilogy.
A big problem with The Dark Knight is how dour the Joker is. The Joker is supposed to be a goofy, fun villain. However, in The Dark Knight, he wastes a lot of time with his boring speeches. Instead of goofing around with pinguim and Catwoman, he has a bunch of repetitive, uninteresting conversations with mobsters. Instead of making jokes, he makes overly-cynical monologues about how crazy the world is and how anybody can be corrupted. In Alyas batman en Robin, the Joker is hilarious and oddly likeable. He makes jokes, he's full of energy and he's a very happy and lively person. Rene Requiestas gave an amazing performance, that was full of passion and entertainment. The same can be said for Heath Ledger. It wasn't Ledger's fault, that the Joker was so dull in The Dark Knight. The blame goes to the writers, who I'm sure had good intentions, but they ended up making an unpleasant version of the Joker.
Nolan's batman films suffer the same problems, that a lot of other superhero-related media suffers from. For some strange reason, superheroes started being treated like the most serious, realistic, edgy and hardcore thing ever made, but why is that? Why is The Dark Knight Returns treated like the best batman comic ever made? The Dark Knight Returns is a boring, depressing story. It pails in comparison, to Bill Finger's classic batman comics, which remember that happiness and colorful antics are okay things to have in comic books. Nolan's films were heavily-inspired por Frank Miller's overly-dark take on Batman, which is a shame.
Thankfully, Alyas batman en Robin, was inspired por the 60's batman show, which is what makes the film so charming. Joey de Leon gives a performance, that's similar to Adam West, while still managing to give his own take on the character. The same can also be said for Rene Requiestas, who has some similarities with Cesar Romero, but is also incredibly creative and unique.
In Nolan's batman films, batman has a questionable subplot, that involves Rachel Dawes. Bruce and Rachel were childhood friends, but out of nowhere, Bruce starts liking Rachel as mais than a friend. He likes Rachel so much, that he was willing to give up saving people as Batman, just so he could be with Rachel. The fact that Rachel was already dating Harvey Dent makes Bruce look even less likeable. Also, in The Dark Knight Rises, Bruce mopes around Wayne Manor, for 8 years, just because he feels like he has nothing to live for, without Rachel. I understand that people need time to mover on, but he did nothing, for 8 years! He didn't fight crime, he didn't save people and he didn't look over his company. He abandoned everybody that depended on him, so he could be a sad, lonely loser.
In Alyas batman en Robin, the romance between batman and Ms. Legarda is superficial and shallow, but since the film is a parody, that's intentional. Their relationship is very humorous and fun. Robin has his own romance subplot, with Vina, who is one of his classmates. Robin and Vina are actually a cute duo and they even sing a sweet romance song.
In batman Begins, Bruce burns down the League of Shadows' hideout, which had people in it, yet claims he doesn't kill people. In Nolan's films, the characters wear boring suits and talk about boring, realistic, overdramatic stuff. In Alyas batman en Robin, the heroes and villains wear colorful, beautiful costumes. They smile, they sing, they dance and they enjoy life. Also, batman never kills anybody and he actually helps a few villains change their ways and stop being bad.
Nolan's batman films act like you have to be dark, serious, intense, realistic and joyless, in order to make a real superhero film. Alyas batman en Robin isn't afraid to be goofy or weird. Alyas batman en Robin is a film that remembers that happiness exists and being playful and lighthearted is better than being overly-dark and intense. If you want to know how to make a fun and joy-inducing superhero film, I recommend watching Alyas batman en Robin.
So, what do you think? Are Nolan's batman films overrated? Is Alyas batman en Robin an underrated masterpiece? Am I insane? Feel free to let me know. Hate comments are frowned upon, but constructive criticism is always welcomed.
