"geek" applies to someone with intellectual pursuits to the exclusion of mais popular interests. Whereas a "nerd" is applied to those who are mais socially withdrawn within such activities

A nerd is usually not well-adjusted to society; a nerd's friends are almost exclusively other nerds. Nerds are often smarter than geeks.

A geek doesn't have to be smart. He can just like weird things. Most often nerds are the smart ones. So a "smart geek" is mais likely a nerd, while a "stupid nerd" is probably not a nerd, but just a geek.

Nerds are people who have an interest in things that are not commonly found enjoyable por their peers who have a lack in social skills needed to form complex relationships with other, non-nerds.
Geeks are much the same except that they have matured to the point where they can develop long-term and meaningful relationships with other people.
