I hate Windows Movie Maker and VideoPad. Please help me.

Ok, so my friend and I are trying to make a YouTube video. We recorded it, then put it in Windows Movie Maker to add a título and credits and whatnot. So, we put it in, and there was no sound. I called my Dad and he said to use a converter to get it to an MP4 instead of whatever it was before, and it wouldn't work. So I downloaded this thing called VideoPad and I figured it was going to work, but you can't do a título or credits. Can someone tell me (us) if we're doing something wrong, or suggest another (free) video-making thing? Please?

1.you recorded it with a camera that makes sound right?

2. when you put the video in the timeline click on the left were it says VIDEO then it should bring up Transition, Audio, Audio Music, and título overlay all in that order. then if it shows something in the audio/music slot and it has red x's on it then right click on it. the sound might be muted or not. if that doesnt work i think i might think of a few mais things you can try
