aleatório dialectics – topo, início 10 antagonists

Hello and welcome to aleatório Dialectics! I know it's been quite a while since my last article, and I am also aware that I promised another review at the end of it. But just like the dragões and zombies in Game Of Thrones, it's on its way, it's coming! XD

However, in the mean time, I figured I should do something here. Consider it as a New ano gift. So here's a list of the topo, início 10 antagonists I enjoyed the most in films!

10: Agent Smith – The Matrix Trilogy (1998-2003)

Kicking off our list is the sentient computer program, portrayed por Hugo Weawing. I usually enjoy antagonist characters played por this brilliant actor. This is no exception. Agent Smith is calm, collected, ruthless and calculating. This bad guy lacks any empathy and loathes all human beings. He's always sleek and stylish in his black suit and dark shades, pretty similar to the outfit of the Secret Service agents. An excellent fighter, especially in hand to hand combat, not to mention he learns how to copy his code and create countless clones of himself, thus posing a serious threat to Neo. If his calm, deep voice wasn't menacing enough, his smile is downright frightening and his evil laugh sends a cold shiver down my spine no matter how many times I hear it. Because of all these traits, he lands on the 10th place of our list.

9: Castor Troy – Face/Off (1997)

The reason why I amor this antagonist so much is because he is played both por Nick Cage AND John Travolta. Ever since I was little Cage was one of my favorito actors and I've always wanted to see him portraying a bad guy. In John Woo's action movie it's exactly what happens. Castor Troy is a dangerous sociopath and an international criminal who threatens to blow up a major city with a giant bomb. But things get complicated when he switches places with his arch nemesis, Federal Agent Sean Archer, played por John Travolta. He does his best performances playing antagonists and this time is no exception either. So after a high-tech plastic surgery, their faces are swapped, making Cage the good guy and Travolta the bad guy. Excellent atuação on both sides and even though this movie is almost 20 years old, it still holds a good amount of entertainment value, ensuring Castor Troy's 9th place on our list.

8: The Governor – The Walking Dead (2010- )

To be honest, I never fully understood this guy's deal. He's the primary antagonist in Season 4 and threatens the safety of the protagonist, Rick Grimes and his group tremendously. You would think that after a zombie apocalypse sweeping through the world the remaining survivors would team up, right? Hell no! As a leader of an organized group of survivors, The Governor holds a grudge against one of Rick's group members, for killing his zombified daughter and he stops at nothing to exact vengeance. Even after losing his colony and an eye, he does not give up and starts everything from the ground once more. He's determined, manipulative, a natural leader and totally lacks empathy or any other basic human emotion whatsoever. Even despite all of this, I can't really hate the guy, because he's the victim of circumstances as well. The zombie apocalypse turned him from a loving father into a mass murderer and a calm and rational maniac who can only feel the lust for vengeance, so he lands on the 8th place.

7: Darth Vader - estrela Wars Trilogy (1977-1983)

I don't think this bad guy needs any particular introduction. He's one of the most iconic antagonists in cinema history. Once being a Jedi Knight, the protector of the innocent and peace, Anakin Skywalker becomes corrupted por the Dark Side of the Force. After losing a light saber duel to his former master and sustains horrible injuries, the only way for him to survive is in a special suit. His black, shiny helmet, his dark cape and the sound of his respirator is unforgettable, such as his voice, provided por James Earl Jones. He made the sentence “I am your father!” legendary among movie fans, therefore Darth Vader has a solid place on our list.

6: Simon Phoenix – Demolition Man (1993)

As you probably have guessed por now, I'm a huge fã of classic action movies, mostly from the 90's. What makes this particular megalomaniac, sociopath serial killer enjoyable is his craziness. His twisted sense of humor and upbeat personality to be exact. Even though I enjoy most of his movies, I don't consider Wesley Snipes a great actor at all. But the man definitely have unique characteristics and I believe this was one of his best performances. Imagine an extremely violent raging lunatic being unleashed onto a world that knows no war or violence! Simon Phoenix is an excellent fighter who's good in martial arts, weapons, firearms, explosives and hand to hand combat. He's an excellent contrast to Sylvester Stallone in this movie, so he earns the 6th place on our list.

5: T-1000 – terminator-Exterminador do Futuro 2: Judgment dia (1991)

Probably one of the best classic action filmes ever made. And the T-1000 is a very memorable antagonist indeed. The high-tech cyborg from the future is basically liquid metal with a versatile array of abilities, including shapeshifting, recreating solid objects such as knifes and projectile weapons for example. Robert Patrick's magnificent performance is just the icing on the cake. His apathetic, determined expression never drops even when he's running or in a car chase. Not to mention the legendary “Hasta la vista” scene! I wouldn't like to meet this merciless killing machine in a dark alley!

4: John Milton – The Devil's Advocate (1998)

Oh yes, the man of dark charisma and charm! Posing as the head of a giant and prestigious law firm, John Milton recruits a young and ambitious lawyer played por Keanu Reeves. But as some strange events take place, he has to realize, his boss is none other than the Prince of Lies himself. That's right! Satan! Al Pacino's outstanding and brilliant performance is indescribable with words, you have to see it for yourself! His expressions, his gestures, his monologues, his menacing grin, his rage! Unforgettable! Always appearing in fancy, expensive outfits, lots of gel on his hair and his goal is not less than total chaos in the world. It is very difficult to put it into words, thus John Milton claims the 4th place on our list.

3: Gollum – The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003)
Now things are getting interesting as we enter the topo, início 3! Claiming the Bronze Medal is none other than Gollum himself. Once a humble hobbit of the Shire, Smeagol is corrupted por the dark power of the One Ring. So he becomes merely a shadow of himself, taking interest in possessing the ring only. This schizophrenic bad guy is a complex character, who's in a constant struggle with his own self. A sad story of how even the most humble minds can be tainted por evil. An award winning CGI animation completes this twisted portrait, ensuring Gollum's third place on our list.

2: SS Colonel Hans Landa – Inglorious Basterds (2008)

When you see Quentin Tarantino's name at the beginning of a movie, you know you're in for a good ride and lots of bloodshed. In this 2008 movie, he takes as back all the way to World War II. To kick the Third Reich's butt for good! Our primary antagonist is a colonel of the dreaded SS, Hans Landa. A professional detective with natural instincts and an ingenious mind. A gamer on a massive scale, always thinking ahead, predicting his opponents' moves. If that wasn't enough, he speaks several languages fluently, such as English, German, French and Italian. His goal oriented, upbeat personality is portrayed magnificently por Christoph Waltz, his marvelous performance granting him an Oscar. No matter how many times I see this movie, I never fail to enjoy Hans Landa, a brilliant character and a perfect antagonist. That is why he lands on the 2nd place on our list.

1: Bane – Batman: The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

It is time to unveil our number one pick, which is none other than Bane. This savage mercenary is a highly trained warrior, who's most powerful aspect is hand to hand combat. His goal is to turn an entire city into ashes, nothing less. But what makes him earn the first place is his insightful remarks, his characteristic, deep voice and British accent and last but not least, an excellent performance por Tom Hardy. Bane truly knows how the human mind works and has a way of turning it against people, playing folks against each other or to serve his twisted goals. He even manages to break Batman's will. But he also serves the purpose of criticizing our society, bringing the many errors of the system into the light. You do not wanna mess with this bad guy! Because of all these complex traits, Bane rightfully claims the first place on our list.

But before we finish, here are some honorable mentions:

The Joker – Batman: The Dark Knight (2008)

The only reason why he did not made it to the topo, início 10 is because he's another batman villain. Heith Ledger's amazing performance was most enjoyable indeed, I loved his dark charisma and a taste for bringing chaos into the world.

Imhotep – The Mummy (1999)

It's not often your antagonist is a 3000 years old, flesh eating mummy. His unique set of superpowers worth mentioning, such as regeneration, controlling sand and the 10 Egyptian plagues and bringing back the dead through magic rites. His transformation from a rotting mummy into a human is still enjoyable since this movie was made in the late 90's, the golden era of non-CGI special effects.

Slade – Teen Titans (2003-2006)

Slade, otherwise known as Deathstroke in the comics, is a typical antagonist. A mastermind, a trained warrior, good with all kinds of weapons, explosives, robotics and evil schemes. Ron Pearlman was an excellent choice to voice this character, his deep voice is threatening even when he talks calmly and quietly.

Aku – Samurai Jack (2001-2004)

Yet another cartoon villain! Aku is the manifestation of pure evil. An ancient, immortal, shapeshifting demon with a unique and memorable visual design. You gotta amor the flaming eyebrows and the never ending evil laughs! One of the iconic bad guys of my childhood right there!

Khan – estrela Trek: Into Darkness (2013)

Cold, calculating, powerful and menacing. Those would be the words I use to describe this antagonist. Not to mention the awesome performance of British actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
