So what's the deal with the Stitch animê series?

Is it canon to the original films and series or not? I keep hearing that it's not and I also keep hearing it is. I know it's taken place many years after the Lilo and Stitch stories but from what I heard, the animê series is basically copying what happened in the original story where Stitch escapes from Jumba's experiment so does that mean Jumba reverted back to evil? Also apparently Gantu turned good in the original story but he's evil in the animê series so does that mean he reverted too? I'm so confused.
