I think their appearance together at the Emmys was in and of itself a confirmation of their romantic relationship to the world without them having to say it in words. For celebrities, it doesn't get any bigger than the Emmys and the Oscars. Nina did not have to accept Ian's guest 'ticket' if she knew that because of the huge media presence would unwanted notice, or she wasn't ready for what it would be interpreted as.
