Reflections of Giftedness in Harry Potter

Very intelligent article, a mind-opener about an original perspective, not that much often addressed : gifted children - while educators focus most of the time on pupils with difficulties.

So true. I recognized myself too in this article. I had also known many kids that are considered as poor students while in fact they just play it dumb because of peer pressure or they have a low self-esteem. My part, as a teacher, is to bring the best out of them and tell them "See ! See what you can do about yourself !" Indeed, it's a question of choice and just let go of peer pressure, so intense during teenage years. Because we have more to earn by making our own choices - despite the difficulties such a choice may entail but it is our choice - than by following others' choices that do not suit our true nature.

I would also add Sirius' quote about choices, the same that is the HP motto here : "What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are."

Yes I thought it was a very interesting article. Like you said, educators often focus on students with difficulties and fail to recognize that gifted students struggle in school as well. Just in a different way. But teachers have so much on their plates, so much is expected of them and they are often not given the resources and support they need to carry out their jobs. And then they get blamed for just about everything. :(
