I think the parental love in harry potter is better sited through James's, Lily's, Tonks's, Lupin's, and mr and mrs Longbottom's willingness to die for their children, as well as through the characters of Molly and Arthur Weasley.

Sirius was a great god-father, and a generally kick-ass character, but I think he viewed Harry as too much of a replacement for James for his love for Harry to be classified as parental.
