\'Game of Thrones\' starts Cersei\'s downfall: \'There is no protagonist in this show\'
Game of Thrones has been added to your favorites.
For all of  "Game of Thrones" Season 5, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) has felt infallible. Unfortunately she forgot that, like everyone in this series, a downfall is one misstep away -- and she made her bad move when she didn\'t view her cousin, former lover and king-murdering co-conspirator Lancel (Eugene Simon) as a threat.
The Queen Mother gambled big when she turned the Sparrows into the Faith Militant, and the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce) was a huge ally in helping her bring down her enemies the Martells. But in proof that no one should ever underestimate Lady Olenna (Diana Rigg), the Queen of Thorns found Cersei\'s Achilles heel, and the Faith arrested Cersei in the seventh episode of the season, "The Gift" (May 24).
While Loras (Finn Jones) and Margaery (Natalie Dormer) both have committed crimes against the Seven, the gods of the Seven Kingdoms\' main religion, neither of them have committed offenses as terrible as incest and murder. Since Lancel seemingly confessed to both when he joined the ranks of the Sparrows, chances are Cersei is in for a horrible trial.

"The danger of the show is no matter how powerful someone is, they often realize they cannot act without impunity," Simon, who plays Lancel, tells Zap2it. "Cersei has always been on top. The idea that she could fall is frightening, because it means that the whole world is always changing. There\'s never ever a sense of security -- even for the characters that you know are morally reprehensible, such as Cersei. Her only redeeming feature is she\'s a good mother, and even then she\'s failing."
A theme of "The Gift" is what happens when parents sacrifice their children for the sake of their own power; Melisandre (Carice von Houten) suggests Stannis (Stephen Dillane) sacrifice his daughter Shireen (Kerry Ingram) to the Lord of Light, while Cersei gave up her son King Tommen\'s (Dean-Charles Chapman) happiness with his new wife Margaery so she could take down her rival. But while Stannis hasn\'t yet chosen how he is going to move forward, Cersei\'s play is likely a bad one. After all, if her son the king couldn\'t save his wife the queen, he likely isn\'t going to be able to save her.

Cersei doesn\'t seem ready to tuck tail and submit, but as she already pointed out to Margaery, time in captivity can change a person. It\'s not a coincidence that the High Sparrow told Cersei another possible outcome for her arrest; instead of a trial, she could opt for the Mother\'s Mercy, where the punishment will be picked to match the crime. Regardless of what comes next, one thing is clear: Cersei Lannister is no longer running the scene in Westeros -- at least for now.
"There is no protagonist in this show, in some ways, you can argue. Everyone is up for the chop," Simon says of Cersei\'s downfall, though he does note there\'s "always hope for her." "She has fallen so low. ... It\'s quite simply the cataclysmic fall of a celebrity."
"Game of Thrones" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
