I find it interesting that when I think of "strong women," I don't think of actors or celebrities. Not that the women named aren't strong, no I totally understand why you would respect them - they
are! Particularly Katherine Hepburn, I see that completely, she's amazing.
Nonetheless, for me, personally, that's not the first kind of person that comes to mind. And maybe that's background, or perspective, but if you ask me to name a strong woman, my automatic "word association" response is
link. And most people don't know who she is. Because she's not a celebrity, she's not a superhero, she was just one girl, from Olympia, Washington, who wanted to make a difference. And she did. In life, she wrote beautiful diaries and prose explaining her deep, deep desire for peace and understanding in this wacky, wacky world. I quote her all of the time. I own the play written from her journals and emails. I have a special place in my coração for her.
The segundo woman that comes to mind is Aung San Suu Kyi. Because, my God, I don't know of anyone short of Nelson Mandela who has done the things she has done. She inspires me beyond words.
Anyways. Those are
my heroes, because they reflect my values, they are doing the work that I think is most important, and they won't back down in the face of
tremendous adversity. And that inspires me.
