A Mary Sue is an idealized character meant to be the Author Avatar (a character who shares traits with the author like name, appearance, beliefs, etc.) or a self-insert character for the reader to live through. Common Sue traits (note, having a few of these to a degree doesn’t necessarily make a true Sue):

-Exceptionally popular/gets lots of attention, even if the Sue is *supposed* to be shy, anti-social, or socially awkward. People are drawn to her, her advice is great, and she’s trusted fairly quickly.

-Only people who challenge or dislike the Sue are portrayed as mean, stupid, or villainous (and usually get a comeuppance)

-Has no real flaws, or ones that are meant to be endearing and relatable (popular ones are clumsiness, temper, awkward, and stubbornness) that are justified by the author or not even intentionally written. These ‘flaws’ will ONLY help her, never hurt her because she’s always right. (For example, she’s rightfully stubborn against something bad or she loses her temper on someone who deserves it.)

-She doesn’t have to suffer consequences for selfish, bad, or reckless behavior

-Exceptionally beautiful, often with exotic traits like unusual coloring meant to make her stand out physically.

-Magical tools/weapons

-Magical abilities/traits like wings, healing factor, immortality, etc.

-Unusual pet(s)

-is a Woobie (has a tragic past or crappy life) but is still perfect/likable despite what happened.

-Exceptionally talented or good at things the author deems good. The Sue might be bad at things the author considers stupid (girly things like sewing, fashion, etc. but good at “boyish” stuff or things outside the norm like fighting, reading, or weapons are common). Even if the talent/skill isn’t realistic for the time period (like being a scholar or warrior when you're a medieval peasant, for example).

-Usually or always get their way even when she’s actually in the wrong. Never gets called out for being wrong, but if they do, the person calling them out is portrayed as a jerk (see above). If she does do something wrong, she’s remorseful and is instantly forgiven.

-Good fashion sense, even if she’s meant to be a rough-and-tumble type or one who doesn’t care about clothes and is effortlessly attractive. Male characters will often comment on how they like this about her.

-Is a Special Snowflake who “isn’t like the other girls”. Something unique, physically or personality-wise, sets her apart from everyone else.

-A Friend to All Living Things. Animals like her and she loves everyone and forgives their imperfections. Willing to protect or risk all for someone she just met recently.

Summed up, the Mary Sue is meant to stand out from everyone else in a good way and is generally portrayed as the ideal character/role model, very cool and universally relatable, usually. Anyone who dislikes the Sue is the one portrayed as in the wrong.

AudreyFreak picked Anna:
It's hard to choose between her and Jasmine. Anna could very easily become a Mary Sue but the movie does a good job addressing her flaws (in fact they pretty much SHOVE them at you- "Look at how impulsive and naive Anna is! look how much trouble these traits will get you into like they do for her!"). She definitely suffers from her bad choices.

The other characters call her out several times for the Hans thing and generally being as reckless as she sometimes is, and those characters are completely portrayed as right. She's definitely a friend to all living things and has a sad past, but the movie shows the latter has made her pretty sheltered and naive because of it; she's not a perfectly well-adjusted person in spite of it.

She's awkward, but we don't see how popular she really is. I think her social awkwardness is balanced out by how polite and friendly she is.

Now Jasmine, she's exceptionally pretty but the other girls in the film look pretty similar to her (I don't know if this should count or not). She doesn't develop much but I don't count this because it isn't her movie. In fact, it's pretty hard for a side character to be a Mary Sue. The movie doesn't really address her flaws, but they're not really portrayed as good, either. Her rashness gets her into trouble several times and her stubbornness frustrates her dad and Jafar.

I'd say. She doesn't immediately succeed at everything she does, she needs Aladdin, and she has a temper.

MaidofOrleans picked Tiana:
She's a very relatable, non-idealized character. While she is exceptionally beautiful men don't seem to be falling all over her, and nothing really comes super easily to her. She works her butt off to get where she is, it isn't just luck. Of all the princesses she's definitely one of the least Mary Sue like.

Diazdiaz95 picked mulan:
She's a warrior, not really the ideal girl, actually she fails at being the ideal girl. I still don't understand the, things come easily thing for her opinion. She fails often and people don't automatically like her when they meet her. She is never perfect, even when she's a warrior she's still the same awkward girl just a bit more mature. People only talk about her in a negative way until she saves the day and it's not like her beauty is the focus of the film. She has flaws like her clumsiness and laziness and not thinking through all her decisions. I just don't see her being a Mary Sue.

LightningWhite picked Tiana:
-Exceptionally popular? Not.
-Only people who challenge or dislike the Sue are portrayed as mean, stupid, or villainous? Definitely not.
-Has no real flaws? Well, she has a flaw, and it is not awkwardness or clumsiness.
-She doesn’t have to suffer consequences for selfish, bad, or reckless behavior? Well... she doesn't do selfish things (if kissing a frog is, then she suffers for it.)
-Exceptionally beautiful? Yes, but most of the DPs are :)
-Magical tools/weapons? No.
-Magical abilities/traits? No.
-Unusual pet(s)? No pets. :P
-is a Woobie (has a tragic past or crappy life) but is still perfect/likable despite what happened? Maybe a little, but her past is not so tragic.
-Exceptionally talented? Yes, in cooking only though.
-Usually or always get their way even when she’s actually in the wrong? No.
-Good fashion sense? Yes.
-Is a Special Snowflake? Yes, but then most DPs are.
-A Friend to All Living Things? Not really.

^ Same thought.

Mulan is close to a Mary Sue. She is the most clever warrior in an army. She beats Captain Li Shang's intelligence. She is good at martial arts after trained. She is the one who defeats Shan-Yu. Just like the real Mary Sue of Star Trek fanfic. Super talented. Also clumsy and kind of social awkward are Mulan's flaws.

Lanalamprouge picked Tiana:
nope. while pretty gets her a passing glance from men and all DP's are pretty but this gets Tiana no special treatment. still needs to work off her butt for her restaurant, and not everything goes her way and the movie doesn't hide the fact that her strength (working hard) is actually a flaw too, keeping her from spending time with other people or including said other people into her dream.

lottielabouff picked Ariel:
Ariel isn't particularly idealised. She makes some bad bad mistakes and has to earn her happy ending.

Tiana and Mulan should stay; they're both heavily idealised in their own ways as feminist, superwomen icobns and how their creators think women should aspire to become like. Mulan especially lacks negative flaws; at least the film does call out Tiana's over-ambitiousness.
