How Will Marvel Adapt The Civil War Storyline? - The Superhero Show
At least a few characters in ABC\'s Once Upon a Time have found their way from the dark side to the light side. We\'ve watched Rumplestiltskin stumble along that path, we\'ve seen the Evil Queen Regina become decidedly less evil, and we\'ve also watched Captain Hook alter his selfish ways. Played by Colin O\'Donoghue, Hook has stepped away from a life of piracy and all the negative activities that come with it and transformed into a better man.
Love played a big part in pushing that development, and we saw it play out last season as he fell for Emma Swan. With Season 3 coming out on Blu-ray and DVD this week, we caught up with O\'Donoghue to discuss how Hook changed in Season 3 and where he\'ll be in Season 4 – especially in relation to the Frozen characters who are coming to Once Upon a time.
IGN also has an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the Season 3 home video release, as O\'Donoghue and Once\'s crew discuss Hook\'s changes.
Once Upon a Time - Colin O\'Donoghue on Whether Captain Hook is a Hero or Villain
IGN: Hook had a really interesting arc last season and had to walk a better path because of things that happened. What do you think were some of the pivotal moments that helped push him towards the right side?
Colin O\'Donoghue: Well, I think it\'s his relationship with Emma. That developed quite a lot and halfway through the season, he realized that the quest for revenge that he\'d been on for so long wasn\'t really doing much for him. He believed that he could love again when he met Emma and got to know her. He decided to allow himself to feel again, and I think that\'s really what it all came down to - this idea that he\'d spent hundreds of years living with hatred and revenge in his heart for the death of Milah and having met Emma he sort of realized \'Oh my god, I can actually feel for somebody again.\'
IGN: Do you think because he opened his heart again that love helped him better deal with the death of Bae?
O\'Donoghue: Yeah. You see toward the end of Season 3 when Hook had Bae on the ship, he truly would have given up everything -- a life of piracy and all that kind of stuff -- to look after this child who was the son of the woman he loved most in the world before he met Emma. He would have given everything up for him. When he comes across Neal as a rival suitor, his quest to get Emma\'s heart sort of blinds him to the fact that this is the same boy that he was about to open up to, to become like a surrogate father for. Towards the end he realizes that and realizes that there\'s more to life than being so blinded by one thing and one quest and he realizes, again, that he could have an open heart for somebody that he needs to care for.
Colin O\'Donoghue and Jennifer Morrison in Once Upon a Time
IGN: Will we see him be able to expand those feelings and act fatherly towards Henry in Season 4?
O\'Donoghue: I mean, towards the end of Season 3 you kind of see a little bit of that, where he decides to tell Henry snippets of who Neal was and he sort of reveals a bit about his relationship with Henry\'s father. We\'re early on in [filming] Season 4, but you\'ll definitely see elements of that again.
IGN: Season 3 had some challenging environments – there were chase scenes around the Neverland jungle and scenes on the Jolly Roger – and a lot of that looked like fun. What were some of your most memorable moments to film last season?
O\'Donoghue: There were a good few. I guess one of the memorable ones was the premiere episode of the last season. We were on the boat, and I remember we were standing there and they had people with buckets of water standing on either side on ladders to make it seem like the waves were crashing on top of us. All of us got absolutely drenched, but we took it in turn. Everybody was standing behind the monitor watching everybody get soaked in slow motion, which was fun.
IGN: Fun and possibly brutal, depending on how cold it was outside.
O\'Donoghue: Yeah, pretty much. I was okay. I was covered in leather.
IGN: And speaking of that, at Comic-Con you said that Hook will be out of the pirate clothes next season. Can you tease anything about that?
O\'Donoghue: Yeah. I cant really talk too much about it, but he\'ll have a change. He\'ll be in slightly more modern clothes. That\'s about as much as I\'m allowed to say.
IGN: Fair enough. And speaking of next season, will Hook have any interaction with the Frozen characters that are joining the show?
O\'Donoghue: He\'ll definitely have some interaction. Again, it\'s one of those things that I have to be very tight-lipped on. I can\'t really go into any sort of specific details, but he definitely interacts with at least one of the characters.
IGN: In regards to Frozen, I feel like it\'s a little different since even though the series has adapted a lot of fairy tales and Disney versions of certain characters, this one just happened. It\'s really fresh in people\'s minds. Does that add a different element, and is it something that you feel on set?
O\'Donoghue: I think there\'s a definite buzz around this which we definitely feel, and Eddie [Kitsis] and Adam [Horowitz] have managed to sort of move the Frozen story seamlessly into Once Upon a Time. I really think that fans of Frozen or fans of Once Upon A Time are not going to be disappointed with how it\'s been treated. And Georgina [Haig] and Elizabeth [Lail] as Elsa and Anna are really fantastic and uncannily like their characters from the film, so I think people will be very happy with how it works.
Season 3 of Once Upon a Time will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, August 19th. Season 4 of the series will premiere on Sunday, September 28th, at 8:00pm ET/PT on ABC.
