The Most Unlikely Marvel\'s Avengers Assemble Team-Ups From Season 1
Chloe Bennet looks to Skye\'s future in the second season of \'Marvel\'s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.\'!
When “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” began its first season, Skye was the outsider-looking-in that didn’t particularly like what she saw in S.H.I.E.L.D.
Fast forward one year, and Skye has now joined Director Coulson on his quest to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D., acting as an integral member of the team while also searching for the answers about her own origins.
We spoke with actress Chloe Bennet about her role in the upcoming season, meeting her on-camera father and much more, so read on to get a hint of what you can expect when “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns for its second season next Tuesday at its new time, 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC!
Marvel.com: Now that you’re back as Skye, having come off that first year and getting to know her, what’s it like to explore these news sides of the character now?
Chloe Bennet: The good thing about TV is that you get to spend so much time with the character, but [they] also grow so much since the first season. Skye [now] is definitely not the same Skye that I was playing last year. It’s actually really interesting because when I was shooting [the first episode of Season 2] compared to the pilot, I was thinking back on how different it is to play Skye now than it was to play her in that first episode, where I was at the diner talking to Mike. It’s pretty fun. A lot happened last year, obviously, with Hydra, and she’s grown so much in maturity and in strength. She’s a lot wiser now. She has a kind of quietness and calmness about her, and an inner strength that I don’t think had surfaced yet last year. So it’s been fun to play. She’s a lot edgier, a lot darker, and she feels more grounded to me this season.
Marvel.com: Over the course of the last season, Skye really developed strong relationships with some of the different team members like Coulson and May. Moving into this new season, how would you characterize where their relationships are at today?
Chloe Bennet: I think you’ll find she’s always had this unspoken bond with Coulson that’s a very father/daughter relationship where clearly the love they have for each other is evident in a very caring way. But he is Director Coulson now, so the dynamic is definitely different. I think it’s a bit more professional. She’s a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent now, so I think she wants to be taken seriously in that light and she’s been training with May.
Marvel.com: What do you think has made Skye want to commit so much more to becoming a full time agent as opposed to just the hacktivist that we met at the beginning of last season?
Skye\'s come a long way since the series pilot
Chloe Bennet: I think at the beginning she came into S.H.I.E.L.D. thinking it was this government-run, CIA-type thing, where they’re not for the people and their motives were not good ones. But throughout the season, being on the team and seeing what was happening, she really got to know why S.H.I.E.L.D. is there. It really is to protect people, and the intention behind the organization is pure. At this point it is illegal to be an agent after S.H.I.E.L.D. was dissolved and the people who are still working for S.H.I.E.L.D. are doing it purely because it’s the right thing to do and I think that’s something that has been a big part of Skye. “This is the right thing to do so I’m going to do it no matter what, no matter how difficult it is, this is what I’m going to do. I’m going to stick up for what’s right.” I think she finds a parallel between S.H.I.E.L.D. and Coulson, and I think that’s why she’s committed to it so deeply.
Marvel.com: How is Ward’s betrayal sitting with, her and how’s that motivate her moving forward?
Chloe Bennet: I think it really motivates her. Coming from someone who has no family and really didn’t trust anyone from the beginning [to] being let into this ragtag family and finally trusting people, feeling like she’s part of something…then all of a sudden after getting her S.H.I.E.L.D. badge for a day, it all goes to crap and she finds out the one person she really trusts the most--obviously besides Coulson--betrayed her, I think that’s going to take some time to overcome. But she’s been training with May and has dealt with it in a good way. The themes of that are still going to be threaded throughout the season, and we’ll see more of Skye and Ward’s interactions for sure. It’s not dead! We wouldn’t do that! They wouldn’t do that to us, I don’t think. I still ship SkyeWard. I don’t as Skye, but I do as me. I would like to see some romance for Skye. I feel kind of bad for her. We should just have one episode where it’s all romance, because these poor guys! It’s all aliens and action! They need some loving!
Marvel.com: Some loving that doesn’t end in betrayal and death and heartbreak.
Marvel.com: And as you mentioned, Skye came into this group and this is really the first time that she grew to trust people. So how does Ward’s betrayal shift that? Does she now have some more trust issues than she did before, or is she still trusting of people like Coulson and May?
Chloe Bennet: I think it’s a balance of both. I think she’s always someone who will wear her heart on her sleeve, but I think she’s much smarter about it now, if that makes any sense. I don’t think she’s the type of person who can halfass anything, and that includes emotions. If she feels something, she feels something. But she knows how to control it more, and I think she’s lost trust in [Ward] but she’s found an inner strength in herself through the process and has put it into training and working hard - into being a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and to being the best that she can be.
Also, a big part of Season Two will be Skye’s search for her family and obviously [her] dad, [played by] Kyle McLachlan, which is really cool. So there’s that whole storyline which Skye will probably get hit in the face with pretty soon during the season, I can’t say when. Poor Skye. I think the second she maybe gets comfortable in her new skin as a field agent, she might get hit with some new information on her family, so [her life is] definitely not going to be drama free, which is exciting.
Marvel.com: And speaking of Kyle, not necessarily saying whether you’ve filmed any scenes with him yet, have you had a chance to meet him or talk to him at all and build that fatherly bond?
Chloe Bennet: I have. You might think I’m weird because every time I see him, I’m like, “Dad!” I just yell it to him. I never even call him Kyle. I just call him Dad. He’s wonderful. I’m really excited. I’ve never had an onscreen dad before, so that’s going to be fun for me but yes,
Marvel.com: Finally, one thing that I’m asking all the returning cast is that, having played this character for a year and gotten to explore certain aspects of her, what aspects would you like, just personally, to delve into with Skye’s character in the next season?
Chloe Bennet: That’s a good question. They’ve been so generous to me with the character where I don’t know if it would be something we haven’t already done with [her]. I feel like in terms of me as an actress getting to play her, I’ve really had a broad spectrum of emotions and scenes. This season she is a bit more badass, so I did do months and months of training before I even began shooting the show. The stunt aspect is there, the emotional aspect is there, even the comedy [is there]. I feel like I’ve been really lucky, I just want to continue and see where the character goes. I don’t think I would even have something that they haven’t given me already. Maybe more flats. Maybe more flat shoes because my feet always hurt. But no, I feel very lucky with what the creators and writers have given me so far. I feel like with the first season, she’s grown so much, and I think you’ll see [that] if you compare Skye from the first episode of Season 1 to the first episode of Season 2, it’s night and day. Once fans see that, it’ll excite them because it will be this character that’s very familiar but unfamiliar at the same time because of how much she’s grown during the hiatus. That’s going to be pretty exciting for everyone to watch.

After helping to thwart Hydra, Coulson was appointed as Director and tasked with rebuilding the agency. This won’t be an easy job to accomplish with the majority of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents either killed, secretly working for Hydra or free agents. Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot, martial artist and longtime friend, will continue to look after Coulson in the wake of the mysterious etchings he’s been carving into walls. What do these etchings mean, and can Coulson be trusted? Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, was found to be a Hydra mole and a traitor to S.H.I.E.L.D. and locked up away from the world and his former teammates. But this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him… After being left to die in the middle of the ocean by Ward, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer, and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist, found a way to escape their watery grave. But all did not go well for Fitz, who was left in a coma and may never regain his full cognitive functions; a devastating blow to Simmons. And computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet), now a full-fledged S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, discovered her origins as an 0-8-4 -- an object of unknown origin – and that her parents were considered “monsters.” Could Skye have darkness lying dormant inside of her? Also joining Coulson\'s core team is Lance Hunter (Nick Blood), a dashing mercenary sharp shooter with a quick wit. Since he didn\'t rise up through the ranks, does he have an ulterior motive for helping out the team? Who can Coulson trust?
