As you may be able to tell from my above comment, there are characters who turn into animals, the Sohma family. They are cursed, but I don't believe it counts as "magical". Whenever they are weak or hugged por someone of the opposite gender, they turn into one of twelve animais from the Chinese zodiac- Oh, right! The twelve animals, plus the Cat.

If you're interested in leitura any mangas, I think you pergunta would scream "+Anima". It's about a group of kids with ability to make themselves part animal (ex., the main character, Cooro, is a corvo +Anima). I'm not sure if that counts as "magical" either, but it's pretty adventurous and dramatic with just the right overtone of humor!
