It doesn’t take a lot to get my interest in some games. One of the most likely things that can sell me on a game is how good the art is. And it’s real damn good to see a game that has been carefully drawn, picture por picture, all to get down the perfect animation. And no game has ever gotten that style of hand drawn animation for each character like the classic Skullgirls.
Skullgirls is one of my favorito fighting games out there simply for hte style, but I like it for other reasons too, of course. Skullgirls takes place in a sort of 1930s esque city, where a fabled McGuffin known as the Skull coração has emerged, along with the current Skullgirl, Marie, as it’s host. So, the characters in the game all try to find the Skull coração in the hopes of making a wish, not knowing that the wishes come with a harsh price. All of the characters in this game are creative in fun in some way. Filia, the school girl with her hair possessed por a violent parasite named Samson. Cerebella, a circus performer and member of the mafia who uses her hat to give her immense strength. Parasoul, leader of a personal army hunting the Skull Heart. Ms. Fortune, an undead cat girl who makes tons of puns and meme references. Peacock, a cartoon character with a violent bloodlust. Valentine, a nurse that performs a sort of ninjutsu. And that doesn’t even include the DLC characters like the pro wrestler Beowulf ,the undead opera girl Squigly and the detective made from instruments Big Band. Skullgirls was the first fighting game to actually make me sit down, learn the mechanics, and try to actually get good at the game. I eventually learned to main characters like Cerebella, Big Band, and Beowulf, simply because I like my heavies in games. I am still no pro, but Skullgirls is one of the fighting games I can safely say I have an above average understanding of. And the animations. I talked about them briefly at the start, but I have to gush about them. Just looking at these lovely movements of the characters is incredible. Can you believe that one man, the talented Alex Ahad, drew every single movement for every single character, with each character having over 400 different drawings for them. Like, damn, Alex, that’s just… words can’t describe how incredible that feat is.
Skullgirls is just amazing. I amor everything about it. I amor the character, I amor the witty writing, I amor the constant references to stuff like anime, movies, video games, and Lovecraftian literature from the 1900s. I wish mais people talked about this game, but I guess that just ain’t happening. We should just consider ourselves lucky that were were able to get this great fighting game at all.
