Boy, I sure am good at lying to everyone when I say I am not that big into FPS games. Okay, now, granted, this can technically not be a first person shooter game. First person, yes. Shooter, debatable. You can go through the entire game without firing a bullet. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s talk about another game dead in the water thanks to EA, Mirror’s Edge.
Taking place in an oppressed city where the media says what it wants and people can’t think for themselves, a group of rebels known as Runners fight back against the military control. One of these Runners, Faith, is tasked with saving her sister from being framed for the murder of a powerful individual all while outrunning the police and military officers that chase her through the pure white city. And man, for a game that has very little color, these visuals are gorgeous. They really make all other as cores like reds and oranges stand out in the white city and it’s so nice to look at visually. Unlike the cutscenes. I will say, these do make for some good Esurance commercials, but nothing mais than that. Thankfully, the gameplay has a ton of variety. A lot of the game will have you doing what a Runner does best. You run all across buildings, running against walls, jumping from building to building, sliding down roofs, all to escape pursuing enemies and make it to the seguinte checkpoint without dying. A lot of the time, things can get really tense, especially when you are forced into a fight or flight situation, as you can knock out enemies and let them ragdoll in hilarious ways, risk losing your pacifist run and shoot them, or just ignore everyone and book it to the nearest exit. All while you gotta do insane parkour moves all across the buildings. And if you fall, you’re going down, down, down. And you’ll be dead, dead, dead. But the game is very forgiving. You may end up dying a lot, but you have plenty of checkpoints to save your ass, which mais than makes up for it. Another thing I should mention is the length of Mirror’s Edge. It is a very short game and can be beaten in a day. But with the time trials, the challenges, the secret cases to find, and the achievements to unlock, it all makes you want to explore and go back through the world of Mirror’s Edge again to see what else the game has to offer and it is so much fun.
Mirror’s Edge was truly an enjoyable experience for the total four hours of its main story but tons of side stuff. It was honestly a shame to see the kind of stinker of a game Catalyst was. But at least we still have the joy that is Mirror’s Edge, the original game, all done before DICE went to shit, as was to be expected.
