It was nearly impossible to lie. The only person that could get completely away with it was Bella.

Honesty was the bes policy throughout the series. Bella was never a good liar. Being honest with the Volturi was the only way they could survie. The honesty between Edward and Bella is what made everything work out. The same thing applied o Jacob and Bella.
Whenever Bella lied to Charlie, nothing good came of it.
