In the books, does Bill propose to Sookie? Is he kidnapped and all that?

In the books Bill does not propose to Sookie because vampiros and humans cannot get married. (She keeps pointing that out throughout the series) but yes he does get kidnapped at the beginning of book 3, which is the main focus of the book.

I've been wayching the show from the beginning and absolutely amor it but I've been wondering recently if I should read the books? I know Alan said that the show and the books aren't necessarily going to match up so is there any point?
