Andrew Lincoln is a guy who loves his job. And why shouldn’t he? He’s the star of the highest-rated show on television and gets to fake-kill fake zombies for a living. So we knew it would be difficult to get him to pin down one day on set of

Still, we tried. So what was your best day ever, Andrew? “Every day. I love this job. It’s the greatest job I have ever had the privilege of being involved in.” See! We told you! This guy is too damn happy!

But we were able to get him to recall a specific day as his favorite after all, and it comes from filming a famous scene from the very first episode of the AMC hit. “I would have to say one of the most memorable times was riding the horse into Atlanta,” says Lincoln. “Just because of the scale. It was at that point that I realized, oh, this is not like any TV show I’ve ever been involved in. It’s much better than a lot of movies — the ambition of the show.”

That scene was also a big change for Lincoln who had been filming lots of smaller scenes before the big Atlanta zombie meet-and-greet. “I just remember it being almost like a dream,” he says. “I had been on my own and isolated for so long and then this crazy sequence in downtown Atlanta. We shut down four blocks. It was a dream come true — I get to ride a horse and get chased down the street by 400 zombies! And then hide under a tank. It was just such an incredible sequence, and that’s when I realized that this was not your average TV show that we were embarking on.”

Lincoln also says that while losing fellow cast members is extremely difficult, those sorts of days end up being memorable as well due to the powerful material they are filming. “When we lose a character, it’s always one of the more painful experiences,” says Lincoln. “But generally they’re incredible acting pieces to get involved in. It’s a double-edged sword. It’s funny, I bumped into Sarah Wayne Callies [who played Lori] and she said, ‘How’s it going?’ I said, ‘It’s still the most beautiful job, but it’s kind of heartbreaking.’ As I go along, we keep losing incredible friends and characters. It sort of kills me doing this job — but in a beautiful way. It’s a great story. But every day is unique, and that’s one of the things that keeps me coming back for more and wanting to keep pushing this guy and pulling the rest of the cast along with me to create this broken fairy tale.”
