Elena made a huge mistake and she'll realize that soon enough. Besides, it's not like Damon - as much as I love him - hasn't done a host of stupid things himself. I agree he deserves to be treated way better, but if he can simply pack up and leave after this, then his love isn't as real and abiding as I thought. Beyond that, Elena has never made any promises to him - she's been straightforward from the beginning about her feelings for Stefan. Damon has chosen to stay by her side because he loves her and if he really wants her, he's going to have to keep being patient, just as Delena fans will have to. It's silly to be throwing in the towel just because Elena made a mistake. She'll come to her senses, it's just going to take a while.
He definitely deserves to be loved, finally. He deserves to be happy and I think he's the only character on the show that haven't had a moment of real happiness. He keeps being rejected.
I understand why Elena was mad, he really was OVERprotective, I know he just wants to keep her alive, but he can't act like that, she's not a five year old and he's not her father and in the last episode he acted like that, grabbing her arm and wanting to take her out. So I do understand Elena's point.
But she's holding on to every tiny bit of Stefan's humanity ,never giving up, always ready to forgive. Even if he did nothing to deserve it this season. And then there is Damon who changed completely because of her, who was there for her every step of the way for the last few months, telling her that he loves her, and she just throws it in his face. You can't do that even if he's just a friend and you feel nothing more for him. That was just cruel. Even if she didn't mean it, she said it.
She was the one asking him to be a better man, to care, to feel and now she's telling him that his problem is that he loves too much, cares too much. That must hurt. He changed, he found his humanity, he let himself feel again, all because of this one girl, and for what? It's still not enough.
Now I don't blame Elena for not jumping into a relationship with Damon, I totally understand her, and she has the right to fight for Stefan if she thinks they still have a chance. But sometimes I just wish Damon could find love and happiness with someone else. But he can't, at least not for now.
