It was called EXCLUSIVE! Nathaniel Buzolic Talks 'Significant Mother' & Kol's Return
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
With his brooding good looks and ample charm, it’s easy to peg Nathaniel Buzolic as yet another heartthrob steadily rising through Hollywood’s ranks. However, there’s so much more to him than the obvious superficial observations. Though he has many blush-worthy qualities for sure — including those
soulful brown eyes of his — what truly stands out about the 33-year-old Australia actor is his humble nature, zest for adventure, and commitment to every role he takes on. From getting his hands bloody as Kol Mikaelson on
to playing a health coach recovering from addiction on
, Nate always gives 100% to every part, regardless of how involved or minor it is.
That being said, get ready to see Nate in a whole new light come Monday, August 3rd! He’s putting his comedic chops to the test in the premiere of his hilarious series,
, as Jimmy Barnes — an easygoing bloke who falls hard for his best friend’s mother, played by the ageless Krista Allen; and viewers who are used to seeing Nate wreak havoc as a dark supernatural entity, will certainly be delighted to witness a more carefree and frivolous side to him. He’s not afraid to get silly — or shirtless for that matter — and proves he’s not only adept at tackling dramatic scenes, but humorous ones as well.
That’s right, this outgoing fellow knows
how to use his impeccable timing and adorable mannerisms to inspire some
Wondering what other surprises Nate has in store for us? Luckily for you, we caught up with him to ask your most burning questions and ended up chatting for nearly an hour as he regaled us with stories about his career aspirations, personal philosophies, and his #1 fan — his amazing mom! Read on for exclusive scoop on his new CW show — which also stars the loveable Josh Zuckerman — his potential return as Kol, and the proudest moment of his life. (FYI, the latter might make many of you tear up so be sure to have tissues on hand!)
. We are so thrilled to have you back on our television screens! What exactly drew you to this role considering it’s different than everything you’ve done so far?
Nathaniel Buzolic: Something that’s not supernatural, right? Finally. [
] You know, for the longest time I can remember saying telling my agent and my manager that I didn’t want to do comedy. I didn’t think I was very funny or had the chops to pull this sort of role off. And when this job came up, I was originally not going to audition for it since I thought I couldn’t do the role justice. I didn’t think I was right for it. However, after I read it and sort of played around with the material, I got a better sense of the character and decided to give it a shot. I went into the audition with low expectations – I had no real anticipation of getting the job, it was more like comedy is something I never really challenged myself with and thought I’d audition just for the experience. It’s always good to keep auditioning and pushing myself out of a comfort zone – you know, experiment with different sorts of roles. And somehow I ended up getting the role! Not sure what that says about the other people who auditioned or how many actually showed up, to be honest. [
] Hopefully I pulled this off and viewers can see I have bit more range.
Alloy Entertainment: We know you said you haven’t done much comedy, but even as Kol Mikaelson, you bring an air of playfulness and humor – a morbid kind, of course — to the character. Would you say that’s a natural reflection of your own personality?
Nathaniel Buzolic: Yea, I definitely have a cheeky side and I think I bring that out in my characters whenever I get the chance. It’s an interesting dynamic to play for sure. It works for Kol, especially, because he wasn’t scared of anyone and was quite mischievous.
Alloy Entertainment: So how would you describe your new character, Jimmy? He seems like a good-time kinda fellow from what we’ve seen so far!
Nathaniel Buzolic: Jimmy is that friend that everyone has that you grew up with that don’t make the best decisions, but you love them anyway because you know their heart is in the right place. He means well but the end result isn’t always what he hoped for. Regardless, he’s a fun character to play. I’ve filmed a full season as him at this point and have had a tremendous time developing him.

is that your character starts dating your best friend’s mom. Obviously, this is going to lead to a lot of uncomfortable-yet-hilarious moments. On a scale of one to ten how awkward do things get?
Nathaniel Buzolic: Oh, they get very awkward. Even just being on set is awkward. My wardrobe is barely present so that’s always interesting. But there were definitely times when Josh [Zuckerman] and I were filming when we would start laughing because the situation would get extra delicate. My biggest fear at this point is that people will come up to me and tell me they relate to these potentially embarrassing moments. Like, ‘Oh, this reminds me of the unforgettable time I hooked up with my friend’s mom’ and I wouldn’t know how to react or what to say. [
Alloy Entertainment: Speaking of which, what was your mom’s reaction to learning you had landed this role?
Nathaniel Buzolic: I think she’s proud of me for getting a job in Hollywood. My mom loves me and has been extremely supportive of my career. But I admit I’m very scared and nervous of having her see the final product – it’s going to be the first time she’s going to see me get pretty raunchy on a television show. The good thing is that I’m doing an American accent, so hopefully there will be a suspension of belief – that it’s not actually me on screen. It will be interesting – I may have to put in a little more effort on Mother’s Day 2016 just in case. But I think she’ll like it; the writers did really amazing job adding different dimensions to the character and making the show enjoyable. There were definitely moments when we burst out laughing on set because we made a discovery no one quite expected. It was really fun to shoot and that’s why I feel like we have something special in the making. We’ll see how it turns out.
Alloy Entertainment: The relationship Jimmy has with Lydia Marlowe, Krista Allen’s character, is pretty unconventional at this point. A younger man dating an older woman isn’t your run-of-the-mill romance and this sort of dynamic hasn’t been explored much on television. Did this role teach you anything about relationships and society’s views on them?
Nathaniel Buzolic: Oh, absolutely! No matter what sort of relationship you’re in, there’s some sort of common ground the two people involved are trying to get to the middle of. You know what I mean? In this case it’s about a younger guy dating an older woman, and it’s about two unexpected characters trying to make it work for both of them despite the odds stacked up against them. I feel like a lot of people will be able to relate to this situation. Personally, I’m dating a girl who lives in another country, doesn’t speak much English, and we have an age difference — but we still work on our relationship. What’s cool about this show is that these two characters [on
] are faced with some less-than-ideal predicaments, but they try their very best to make it work. Their romance takes some great turns and a lot of hilarity ensues in the process. Krista’s character is gorgeous and confident, and it’s nice to see this on television.
Alloy Entertainment: It sounds like there’s already an awesome blooper reel on the way!
of bloopers. Sometimes they’d give me dialogue that was pretty difficult to spit out with an American accent – it takes a bit of work to get my Australian one to disappear – so there were some truly funny instances in which my pronunciation of certain words and phrases inspired some laughs, or when we made such big mistakes that it was actually entertaining. There were also some cool moments during which we went completely off script and dabbled in a bit of improv, and those somehow panned out. I’m excited to see what the producers put together and what the final episodes will look like.
Alloy Entertainment: Judging by your Instagram posts, it looks like the whole cast had an incredible time on set. Are there any especially entertaining behind-the-scenes stories you’d like to share?
Nathaniel Buzolic: I have so many! I think for me, personally, what was amusing yet incredibly awkward was that I had to be in my underwear a lot, and there were often scenes where I was semi-naked. It got to the point, though, that I decided everyone’s going to see me nearly bare anyway, so I started walking around set in my underwear. I feel like I grew much closer to the crew since I was 95% naked most of the time. I bonded to everyone fairly quickly because I was so exposed. In fact, I got so comfortable with Jimmy’s wardrobe, I would forget I was barely dressed and would get caught up in conversations with people in between takes. However, I’m not going to lie to you: The most awkward thing I probably did was push-ups in between scenes, trying to squeeze a workout in when I can — I’m sure Stephen Amell does the same thing on Arrow – but I always felt the crew was looking at my bum and judging my form. [
] Josh [Zuckerman] actually handled it pretty well. I’m sure they say nice things about me in interviews, but the reality is I was such a piss on set and would annoy the poor guy all the time – I got such pleasure out of it. [Laughs] Eventually he realized that was just my personality and the two of us formed a great friendship. Hopefully the show gets picked up for a second season so we can continue working together.
Alloy Entertainment: Based on your description, Jimmy seems like he’d be a shoo-in for
. Is he the type of person who can hold his own in a dance battle with Channing Tatum?
Nathaniel Buzolic: Let’s be honest – no one is ever going to top Channing Tatum’s moves; he’s such an amazing dancer, it’s out of control. I think the question should be, ‘Would you be willing to look stupid dancing alongside Channing Tatum?’ and the answer is YES. It wouldn’t be a dance-off – more like a dance defeat. It would be cool to be in
– if a third movie ever did happen – just because it looks like those guys have a fun time together. And, considering Jimmy has his top off all the time on
, he would definitely be comfortable with this arrangement.
Alloy Entertainment: Was there some sort of stipulation in your contract that stated all of Jimmy shirts were to be burned?
] Yes, definitely. Once I found out I had this role and more about the character, I had to change some things up including eating healthy. I omitted pasta, bread, candy, and refined sugars from my diet and started working out more. I put myself on a strict regimen, of course, but the health benefits have been incredible. Often, people ask me my age, and they’re shocked when they find out how much older I actually am. Still, it was so hard and I can only imagine the training the
cast has to [undergo] to take their fitness to the next level. I feel like my abs are between six – twelve months away from even standing a chance next to those guys.
Alloy Entertainment: In all seriousness though, based on the videos you post on Instagram, you seem like one of those individuals who loves to hit up the gym. What keeps you motivated, especially when you have such a jam-packed schedule?
Nathaniel Buzolic: I sincerely believe that, as with anything else in life, hard work pays off. The thing most people are surprised to learn about working out is that you won’t see results until about 8 – 12 weeks in, — if you remain committed that entire time, that is. And once you start seeing your transformation, it encourages you to keep going. I truly respect people who finish what they’ve started – whether it’s an exercise program or a career path — and don’t quit when things get tough. It’s not easy, but then again, things that come easy don’t have much value. Personally, I started working out twenty weeks before we began filming Significant Mother and my goal originally was – since I turn 32 in August 2015 –to be in the best shape possible. Then this job came up and required me to be physically fit – and because I had already begun 16 weeks earlier, I was already there. If I hadn’t decided to start working out well before I knew about the role of Jimmy, I probably would not have had the same physique that I have now and I may not have gotten the part because someone else was a little more prepared. The timing was perfect! It’s one of those funny life moments where your goals and aspirations sort of align with one another. And I don’t want this to come off sounding superficial – it’s not about “Oh hey, look at me I’ve got abs!” Instead, it’s about personal fulfillment — about setting reasonable goals and achieving them through discipline and hard work. Sometimes we wait for an opportunity to spring up and then start preparing ourselves for it, but I think it’s better to get started beforehand – especially if it makes you healthier and happier – so that you’re ready to give everything your best shot.
Alloy Entertainment: Another awesome aspect of the show is that aside from having assembled this team of talented cast members, writers, directors and whatnot is that there will be some really fun guest stars! Whose special appearance were you most pumped for?
Nathaniel Buzolic: I was super excited about working with Denise Richards since I had such a huge crush on her when I was a kid. It was great to have her on the series and she came in and played her character so perfectly.
Nathaniel Buzolic: I don’t really get star struck, to be honest. We’re all just human and there to get our job done, and it’s probably a good thing since that would be super awkward. [
] But, I definitely respected Denise [Richard]’s work ethic; it was cool to work with her. Actually, come to think of it, there was one time where I was sort of star struck. It was when I was doing the
spin-off pilot and I was sitting in the backseat with Jensen [Ackles] and Jared [Padalecki] and kind of got excited since I used to watch their show. I didn’t know if it was real or if it was all a dream; it felt like I had walked into an alternate reality.
Alloy Entertainment: It’s kind of amazing you didn’t just forget your lines in her presence and think, “OMG! I’m standing next to the star of
.” That was the “risque” movie all the kids were watching back in the day when their parents’ backs were turned.
…that’s actually what I was thinking when I first met her, but I didn’t know how to phrase it for the sake of the interview. [
] I think every teenager at that time watched this movie secretly with their friends. There was a point in our show when something happens with another character and as I was watching it [play out] in front of me, someone said to me, “You kind of looked like you blanked out there for a second there.” And I was like, “I’m so sorry. I was just picturing Wild Things. I apologize. Let’s get back to work.” Honestly though, Denise was so lovely, really nice, and so funny. It was awesome to have her on the show.
Alloy Entertainment: Can you tell us about any other guest stars or is it a surprise?
Nathaniel Buzolic: Of course! We’ve had some really fun appearances, including Jerry O’Connell and Linda Gray. Oh, and Terry Kiser who’s from
, one of my favorite movies. He was fantastic. He had this old-school Hollywood presence about him, you know? A natural energy and charisma. He was cool without even trying to be.
, naturally, we can’t do an interview with you without asking this fan-favorite question.
Alloy Entertainment: Ha! You’re right on the money. If the opportunity
arise, would you be willing to resume your role as Kol?
Nathaniel Buzolic: From what I understand, there are going to be a lot of flashbacks in Season 3, and I’m hoping Kol can come back and be a part of some. I pretty much made it clear when I signed on to
. I enjoy playing the character so much and feel as though there’s more to his back-story. Another reason I’d like to return is because I love interacting with the fans of
. They are so passionate and committed, and the thought of not being an official part of that world anymore is a little sad for me. However, the writers always have amazing ideas in place and so many other storylines to expand on. I do keep a little bit of hope, though, that I’ll get to come back, and if I do, it would be such an honor and blessing; and if it doesn’t, I’ll have all these incredible memories from the show to hold on to and can only hope I’ve done the character justice and treated him well.
I actually caught up with Julie Plec recently at a fourth of July party and had to tell her, “Thank you so much for changing my life. It was a special experience for me and came at such a significant moment in my life.” I don’t think she knows how great the opportunities she provides new actors with truly are; we appreciate every bit of it and we’re grateful she takes a chance on us.
Alloy Entertainment: You’re too humble! If you must know, there is tons of Kol support out there. When [SPOILER ALERT!] Esther arose from the coffin instead of him in the Season 2 finale, lots of viewers freaked out. On that note, how exactly should the rest of the Mikaelson siblings be punished for interfering with Kol’s potential resurrection?
Nathaniel Buzolic: Oh, we’re talking about a hardcore punishment here! They should be subjected to watch really bad television – maybe sixty hours straight of terrible reality shows – with absolutely no interruption. It should be very serious. Interestingly enough, lots of fans tweeted me prior to the finale to ask if I was coming back and I didn’t know how to respond without spoiling anything – like, I haven’t shot anything at this point so probably not? [Laughs] It’s so flattering that so many people want to see Kol back in action and, if he did return, I’m always down for the opportunity to cause more mayhem in New Orleans and give Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah a run for their money.
Alloy Entertainment: Surprisingly, one of our favorite Kol scenes involves young Marcellus. It was so diabolical and twisted, and though he was endangering a child’s well-being, it was hard to hate on him.
Nathaniel Buzolic: Yea! It’s funny you mention that scene because it’s such a classic Kol moment. His intentions are quite clear, but he somehow manages to infuse some comic relief into it, like, “Oh, I’m just trying to help out. This is good for everybody.” The thing with Kol is that he’s always trying to push people’s buttons and crossing boundaries – I like to think of him as the child who got ignored a lot and tries to attract attention by acting out. All he wants, at the end of the day, he feels left out and yearns to be loved and accepted by his family.
Season 2, was seeing how these other actors – Daniel Sharman and Maisie Richardson-Sellers – interpreted the characters you and Claire Holt, respectively, have molded. What are your thoughts on Daniel’s performance as Kol, and was there anything in particular he did that made you go, ‘Hmm. That’s such an interesting take.’
Nathaniel Buzolic: From what I saw, Daniel did a fantastic job. He’s an amazing, talented actor, and I think it’s such a huge responsibility to tackle a role that’s sort of already been established. He definitely made the character more attractive, which is a plus. So I have to credit him for that. But I will say I now sometimes get confused when fans say “bring Kol back” – I’m not sure which one of us they want. There’s two of us now! If the [writers] did add a third one, however, then I might take issue with it. I’d be like, ‘Look, let’s sit down for a meeting and have a chat about Kol’s direction. For example, what is his stance on chocolate ice cream? Let’s clear it out of the way. Does he like it, does he not like it? Is there some sort of possibility he’ll be consuming chocolate in the near future? Will he enjoy it? I feel like we should get some consistency.” [
] But to be honest, I was mostly jealous that Daniel Sharman got to have a romantic interest and some cute little love scenes. When am I going to get to kiss Davina? It’s not fair, dude.
Alloy Entertainment: Oh, Kol and Davina — they make quite the pair! Not sure if you saw this, but they were trending on twitter a few weeks ago thanks to the adorable pic you shared of yourself and Danielle Campbell, which include the hashtag “#Kolvina.”
Nathaniel Buzolic: I’m a little bit cheeky, aren’t I? I’m definitely not disappearing into the night. [Laughs] I just wanted to show the fans what our [version] of #Kolvina might look like if it happens, give them a taste.
Alloy Entertainment: Do you consider Kolvina your OTP – “one true pair” in fangirl speech – or have you pledged your allegiance to another fictional couple?
Nathaniel Buzolic: Oh, definitely. For a long while, in the beginning of TVD, it was all about Team Stelena and hoping that the good guy wins. Now I’m focused on the Kol and Davina relationship.
Alloy Entertainment: FYI, not sure if you’ve been keeping count of all your projects but you’re a total Alloy sweetheart. You’re starring in
Nathaniel Buzolic: It’s true — Alloy Entertainment has been quite good to me and is the only reason I’ve gotten to stay and work in the United States and not have to return home. I’m almost tempted to ask for my own show at some point. [
does since The CW hasn’t dabbled much in comedy; I’m hoping it resonates with fans and we get a second season.
Alloy Entertainment: You know, there were some sassy remarks made when the
title and tagline were revealed; but based on the clips we’ve seen so far, the series seems so endearing and funny. A lot of fans seem genuinely excited about tuning in. The same thing occurred when the Jane the Virgin trailer was unveiled at The CW’s 2014 upfront – people judged it by the premise but it turned out to be an instant hit and a critical darling at that. It seems like SM has a lot of similar potential – especially if the official poster is anything to go by!
] I’m actually hoping they turn that into a billboard and each ab will be amplified in scale. That would be cool to see – driving around Hollywood and having my semi-bare body staring down at me.
Alloy Entertainment: And now for some non show-related questions! What three things that always bring a smile to your face?
three things? This is going to be tough! The first thing would be my mom. I absolutely love her and I’m not just saying that; she’s the best human being in the world –so full of love and kindness — and one of my best friends. We talk twice a day every day, and she makes me so happy – honestly, doing things for her and making her happy brings me so much joy. Second, my spirituality. I’m pretty open about the appreciation I have for my faith on social media. I believe in God and Jesus and, personally, having a strong foundation in something that’s spiritual is super important to me. I like to humble myself; I know I’m a flawed person and not perfect by any means, so it’s nice to know there’s something greater than all of us out there that’s in control of our destiny. The third thing would be my girlfriend, who I’m seeing soon and I’m excited. She’s flying in from Paris and we haven’t seen each other in months. And you know what? I’m going to add a fourth item to this list. I’m very thrilled by the possibility of life. While I’m appreciative of the opportunities I’ve been offered, I understand that sometimes people go through a dark period during which they experience disappointment after disappointment. However, I’m also a firm believer in hope – something we all have in common — and that good things can happen to us at any given moment. Optimism can go a long way.
Alloy Entertainment: You should seriously consider becoming a motivational speaker – you know, when you’re not busy working on all these hit shows!
Nathaniel Buzolic: I don’t know if I’d be any good at that, though I’ve been called that once or twice. [Laughs] But, you know, it’s about perspective – how you interpret your blessings and choose to take on your day. I personally live by this affirmation which I shared on twitter not too long ago: “A tree will spend its entire life fighting through the wind, standing in the rain and growing towards the light. So will I.” I was in Portland, reflecting on my year, when I noticed this tree and inspiration struck. No one can deny that life isn’t easy or perfect – it’s a constant struggle. Whether you have a million dollars in your bank account or nothing, we all face challenges. The important thing to remember is to continue to work through these hardships and to strive towards something better. We’re all on different journeys, but if we all embraced this mentality, the world would be a better place.
Alloy Entertainment: That’s a beautiful way of seeing the glass half full. Looking back on all your accomplishments, what would say has been your proudest moment?
Nathaniel Buzolic: When I was a little kid, my family was really poor. My mom was a refugee from Croatia — her father was killed by Communists when she was younger — and my dad left us when I was 2 years old so she had to provide for my brother and me on her own; she went through such a rough time and had a very hard life. Growing up, money was scarce so I began working when I was about 12 to help her pay bills.
On her darkest days, when she was battling depression, I’d ask her to name one place she’d like to go to and she’d say she would love to visit Venice even though she reasoned this wouldn’t come true for her. So to keep her spirits up and brighten up her day, I would tell her, “I promise you, no matter what it takes, I’m going to get you to Venice.” I may have been a kid but I was really determined to make her dream come true – I just didn’t know how or when. Sixteen years passed, and then, a year ago, I was attending a convention and was able to make it happen. It was such a special moment for us; seeing her face light up was priceless and brought me more joy than anything else I could have ever achieved. It was all so surreal and it’s memory I’ll keep with me for the rest of life. And you know what? I link it back to
job, since it helped make this trip possible. I often think of Julie Plec as someone who was important in helping me achieve this goal since she believed in me and gave me a job, and it just happened to be a job on a show that was popular internationally and served as an amazing springboard for my career. All these different circumstances occurred at the same time, and resulted in a kid being able to keep a promise his mom.
Alloy Entertainment: What a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing it. It must be so nice for your mom to have a son who’s not only successful, but who also adores her and doesn’t forget where he came from. Sometimes it’s easy to get swept up by work and other commitments, but it sounds like you prioritize family above all else.
Nathaniel Buzolic: Totally! I am so grateful for all the lessons my mom taught me throughout my life. And I am so grateful for my upbringing because it made me who I am today. A lot of people get bitter about certain shortcomings such as not having enough money or not growing up with two parents who love them; but, my experiences have made me appreciate what I do have all the more. If I ever get the opportunity to have children one day, I know that everything I missed out on will be given back to my kids tenfold. We are often happy when something good happens, but we also need to find a way to turn the bad into something worth our while, as well. When you learn how to do that, you’re almost unstoppable.
Alloy Entertainment: While we TVD and Originals fans freak out over supernatural drama, what do you tend to fanboy over?
for sure. Hand down! It was such an intense series and I enjoyed every minute of it. Charlie Hunnam was brilliant in it and such a badass. I got addicted to it a while back and binged watched a lot of it on Netflix in one go. I am actually tempted to get a motorcycle now, you know? Just get a motorcycle and ride around on the open road – although I doubt I’d ever look as cool as Jax [Teller]. My obsession has gotten to the point that whenever a motorcycle gang rides past me, I automatically think, “I wonder if they have the same problems that SAMCRO did. Is a drug cartel giving them never-ending grief, as well?” It’s crazy – Kurt Sutter is a genius. If I ever met any of those actors, I’d probably be quite excited to chat with them and see what their experience was like working on this series from a professional standpoint. For my next role, depending on how
performs, I would love to do something that’s set in that sort of world – just really gritty and raw. For now, though, I’ll focus on comedy and see if I can be funny.
Alloy Entertainment: Well, based on what we’ve seen so far, lots of laughs will be had.
Nathaniel Buzolic: Well, we’ll try it out and see what happens. If I’m not, we’ll just never talk about it again. [Laughs]
